I've seen some really nice images from the Olympus E500 and it has the little shake thing to keep dirt off the sensor which would be nice. Canon would likely have a lot larger choice of lenses if you're wanting to build a system, and I'm sure the Rebel takes as nice of photos.

I would suggest you do two things. First, if you have it narrowed down to these two cameras, I would go to a site like dpreview.com where you can select both cameras and compare features side by side. I would also look at the sensor performance in the sample images at different iso ratings to see if the noise levels are acceptable. Then before you make your final decision, go to a camera shop and handle both cameras to see which one "fits" better, has the controls you'll need to use in the right places, etc. This is the most important step. Anyone can say "you gotta get THIS camera" but if it doesn't feel right in your hands and you can't find the controls when you need them, then it's worthless. Both cameras come highly rated, and the image quality will be very similar, though I do believe the Canon would perform better at higher iso ratings if that is something you would need.

The Rebel XT is better. Also you have the selection of over 50 lenses to choose from, the L lenses being some of the best 35mm lenses ever made.

P.S. The first like is a subjective answer (me being my normal smart elic). There is no 'better' camera, just a camera that's better for you.

im a newbie here....read on some site that since olympus dslrs use the four thirds sensor they have superior image quality than dslrs not using four thirds format but on reading reviews of both the cameras, canon fares much better in many respects including noise levels at higher ISO....can some1 elaborate whether four thirds realy makes a difference...

I was at my sons ballgame today and a sports photographer was there and she had a Canon 20D. she let me pick it up and I liked the feel of it . Hge had a 75-300mm lens and she took some shots of my son in the outfielf. The shots were very clear and the color was amazing.I am wondering is the camera to advanced for someone just starting out?Should I just stick with the Canon rebel Xt like she suggested?

I don't believe it would be too big of a leap. Lot's of people start digital with a 20D. It also has the same automatic modes as the Rebel XT such as landscapes, sports, portraits, nightscenes, etc. Those automatic modes will help you get accustomed to the camera until you move over to the manual modes. If you like the feel of the 20D then the XT might be small for you. I wanted a Rebel XT myself but then decided "no way" when I held it. Personally I felt it was too small and my fingers felt bunched up. It was like wearing a tux that was too small. It was just really uncomfortable and I wouldn't have been able to do what I wanted. Go to a camera shop and hold both in your hands and see which you like the feel of better, then that will help you decide.
