Photography Question

I need a better telephoto set up

I have a small budget for equipment.

Currently I have a 70-300mm Sigma zoom lens for my Canon Reble 6.3mp digital camera. I need a better telephoto effect for my birds etc that I like to shoot.

Can anybody suggest something that would work? I was considering running out and buying a teleconverter but somebody told me now with a zoom lens. I'm completely confused. I know my camera has a conversion factor ut that's still not enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need pluses and minuses of this and that. Spec sheets mean nothing to me.

Birds as you know are very difficult to shoot. Even if you could afford a 600mm lens you would still have problems capturing birds. What you probably need to do is try to attract them closer to you by feeding them and providing water. If you could arrange your feeder/birdbath close to a low tree all the better. Birds typically will land in exactly the same spot time and again before lighting on a feeder or birdbath. If you don't mind what the neighbors think and can afford one, get some kind of blind or set up your equipment in a window so you can get closer. Good luck!

  Darleen,

Here is an answer. Now whether our not it's an answer for you, I can't guess. I had an old f8/500mm Nikkor lens when I made the switch from film to digital, and from Nikon to Canon. I was going to trade in the lens and the offer was ridiculous, so I kept the lens. You can pick up a very nice fixed telephoto for pennies on the dollar from eBay or a pawn shop. The trick is to get the lens to work on your camera. There are adapters made for the Canon EOS to Nikkor lenses that do this. However, most folks would run into a situation where the lens would not focus at infinity, (which is where you would probably shoot the birds) I found one imported by www.goshotcamera.com that is well made, and works perfectly. I bought a used Nikon doubler ($10), so for about $50 plus the telephoto lens, I have a f16/1600mm lens, or an f8/800mm lens as mounted on the 20D.
I have a shot in my gallery of a sparrow on a telephone wire about 100 feet from the camera. The downside is that you'll be using a tripod, because of the slow shutter speeds you'll be at, and of course you lose autofocus.
For the occasional long shots I take, it was a real cost saver. - Jim
