Photography Question

How to get Models for Nudes

I saw a book from the late seventies that really inspired me to try black & white nudes, male and female. Does anyone have advice on how to approach someone and ask if they will model? Should the model be paid? I know I will have to have the models sign releases, but I don't really know how I should go about bringing it up and asking someone (other than friends, of which I don't think I have any that would be willing!)

  Andrew,
I would suggest a couple of things may help.
Put a free ad on Craigs list that you'd are looking for a model or two to simi-nude and nude Artistic work. In exchange they will receive copies for their portfolios.
Also , I had been contacted by the Community Playhouse to do Portfolio Work for the cast in a Play they were putting on.
Something like that may be a good place as well.
I hope it helps,
Debby

lol most models won't shoot nude for TFP. check out OneModelPlace, ModelMayhem, GarageGlamour for listings. most will specifiy if they will do nudes and clarify the payment.

Time For Prints. Their time in exchange for a few prints for their port. Usually a standard when a photographer wants to test equipment or new techniques.

One Model Place is a good place to look but you will need to show a quality portfolio of your work. Even in LA where models are a dime a dozen it isn't easy to find them to work for TFCD (trade for CD). You'll need to show them you've got skills and a solid sketch of the end result. I think you'd do better on Craig's list. Good Luck. You can find model releases all over the internet under Google.

Oh one more thing, if you do pay for the model, $125-$175/hr is the going rate for LA.

Andrew I read your bio and you stated that you only been doing photography for a week and half.

First I agree with Oliver. You have to show a solid portfolio and some pretty outstanding work before anyone is going to pose nude for you.

My suggestion is to work on model photography and offer Time for Print. Get a solid portfolio base under you and sometimes this can take while.

When you doing model photography look for beautiful locations, look at props closely, a hair and makeup artist is always nice and you can offer this as the photographer it makes your images nicer, and make sure all clothing is ironed and looks nice on the model before you start shooting.

Work on your portfolio and make it as nice as you can so you have something to offer when asking for model photography.

Kerby

I guess I need to update that profile. That was posted months ago! I am building my portfolio now, and have several good shots of models. I haven't been able to post any because I've switched from digital to 35mm film and don't have a scanner. I've even had the former art and marketing director of Southern Living tell me that my shots were as good and some better than he'd ever seen (and used in the magazine). So, I'm not just plunging into it because it's nude, or risque, it's just been a natural progression of interest. Now, relatively, I am still new, but you have to start somewhere! There's always someone's first time shooting nudes!

  yeah id say $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

But be carefull who you ask... dont wanna end up in Jail..lol
I know there are modeling websites out there where models go to get work but its gonna cost you.. youd prolly do better sticking to the clothed kind for now... unless you really know what your doing and are sure you can get some great shots. hey, I thought the models would have to pay you to take their photos?

good luck.
Craig-

I realize this thread is a little older now, but I just happened across it. Another site where photographers and models can connect is called www.modellocate.com. You can put a portfolio of your work there for free, and the models' pages say right on them what they're willing to do and for what price (TFP or Payed). I'm actually on there under the model section. www.modellocate.com/model/4771

Hey Sipho: Try the fine arts department of your local jr. college or university. Talk to a painting or drawing instructor and see of you can photograph on a day when they're drawing / painting nudes. That way, everything is done in the open and above board, errrrr...so-to-speak and offer prints to the instructor(s) and posing students.
