Photography Question

Jeff Galbraith

Starting a B&W darkroom.

I am considering trying B&W film developing, but I am not quite sure what's involved in setting up a darkroom. If anyone could give me a general idea of what's involved and approximately how much it would cost to get started, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Some library will have The Print book of the Time-Life Photography series. That lays it out well. To develop your film, you need only a truly dark closet, since you need total darkness only to take 35-mm film out of the cassette, put it on the reel, and put it in the light-tight tank. Then you pour the chemicals in and out without light getting through.
Check ebay for used stuff, and you might get everything you need for a few hundred.
You might close off a bathroom or a corner of your basement for printing and processing your prints. A darkroom should have a dry and a wet side.
The dry side is for your enlarger, timer, paper, easel, safe light, etc. The wet side is for your developing, stop bath and fixer trays. If I could give you only one tip, it would be to have running water handy to get the chemicals off your hands before you go over to the dry side and touch your paper or enlarger. I've been bitten by stains on prints caused by sloppy procedures.

  Hi Jeff,

I have an old Simon Omega Variable Condensor enlarger, D-2, with a Schneider lens. It was last used with a 2 1/4 negative carrier, but I'm having trouble locating the carrier. The equipment has been in my attic for 30 years and is in need of a good home. It's available for the shipping costs.

Please contact me at Bunny@bunnysnow.us
for more information.

  Hi Jeff,

I've located the 2 1/4 square negative carrier and have photographed all of my black and white darkroom equipment that is available for the shipping costs, across the USA. They can be viewed at:

Click on enlarger in the lower left hand corner, and if you are interested, write me.
