Buying a Konica Minolta 5D

I want to purchase a Konica Minolta 5D. There is soooo much info on the internet that I am now confused. I am just a budding photographer who wants to take really great pics of family and family events and portraits of my children. I have a Minolta SLR film camera already and have minolta lenses for it. Please tell me... is this camera discontinued why can't I find it in the comparisons link on this site, will my film lenses fit the 5D, and is there some new technology that I should wait for before I sink my money into this camera? Help...!!

Dawn; the 5D is a great camera that would, in some respects, be a great camera for someone starting out in serious photography. However, and this is important - Konica Minolta is discontinuing all their camera lines as of March 31st. The company will sell their stock to Sony who may or may not continue to develop that line. I also own several KM cameras and am feeling sad about this situation, but in my case, I have to think about switching to another maker.

I say go for the maxxum 5D Dawn. Minolta did sell their camera technology to Sony Corp but they did anounce the are going to be making their own DSLR camera which will take all the maxxum lenses. Also, your maxxum auto focus lenses will work on the maxxum 5d.
I say go for he 5D before they are all gone because when Sony makes their own DSLR, You will be stuck using their memory sticks and adapters which are slow and not very user friendly.
Plus, when Sony does come out with their DSLR, it will come with Carl ziess glass lenses with the maxxum mount which will go over to you Minolta cameras. From what I hear we will see somthing from them around fall this year.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go with the 5D. I had a chance to test one and it seemed very comfortable to me. I think it will suit my needs. Thanks... Dawn

Maybe you missed the excellent point Irene was making. Essentially, Dawn, you're buying a camera made by a company that no longer exists. Sony may decide not to support any of their predecessor's equipment in favor of offering new Sony technology. So, when it comes to service, getting parts, tech. info, etc., you may be just out of luck.

It's a crap shoot, but the way camera manufacturers have been wheeling and dealing lately, dropping product lines, parts, failing to offer technical support beyond the tail-light guarantee, I wouldn't do it. And if you imagine for a minute that Sony is going to care about the fact that you bought a Minolta product, forget about it. I'll lay odds that they'll do something, anything, to make their equipment incompatible with the firms they acquired.
Take it light
Mark

Thank you for the info Mark. I haven't bought anything yet... Would you kindly recommend a camera for me to take a look at that is comparable as far as technology, quality, and price to the Maxxum 5D? I was hoping to make an easy and inexpensive transition from film to digital that is why I asked about the 5d.. but that may not be possible if what you say is true.

You might be interested to know Knica Minolta has recently gotten out of the camera business. On one hand, that might mkes for good deals on existing stock. On the other hand, you might have service issues if something goes wrong...
