Well, I think there are only about three ways to do this, although you can vary each according to taste in your lighting preferences. First, shadow the subject in the foreground which would mean that you meter off the backlit background and let the frontal subjects fall into shadow or silouhette. Second, you can balance the background light with some foreground fill light. To do that, meter the background then add fill flash at whatever brightness level you want for the foreground to give the subjects there some but not a lot of detail. The third way, of course, is to let the background go at whatever exposure it turns out to be, and just front light the foreground with either available light or some fill flash. See if that helps ya out Nichola. Take it light.

Thanks for the advice! To clarify what I would like suggestions on... Sometimes I feel that the subject loses it's detail and it just ends up looking like an outline instead of an element in the foreground. Although I have always loved photography. I am just starting to experiment with the manual aspect of it so these suggestions are great!
