D200 vs D2x Purchase Decision

I had been building up to purchasing a D2x as I begin to launch an "on the side" wedding photography business. I have read in several places (including the new issue of Pop Photography) that the D200 is very comparable in image quality and only lacks in some elements of ruggedness!! Can anyone add insight - the last thing I want to do is buy a D200 and regret not going all the way with a D2x

i have a D2X that I just LOVE. It is rugged and does a great job on anything I need it to shoot. I don't know about the D200 but I am thinking of getting one for a back-up. I've been doing photography for 38 years and the D2X is my favorite right up there with the F5. Good luck!

I am in the same boat Michael, I also wanted the D2X but now I'm not sure after talking to a local photo store. The differences aren't that different but the prices are. Follow the link below to B&H Photo and select compare for the two cameras and look at the differences, some are even better on the D-200 and I'm not sure if I want to spend an extra $3,000 for 2.2mp, I'm told the sensor and processor are the same quality but I don't know for sure.

I know the D200 has had a banding problem, and Nikon's fix lessens but doesn't eliminate this.

If I had to choose between either, I'd go with the D2x. It is a better camera.

  Hi John,
For those of us that aren't so savey with digital could you please explain what banding is and the problem with it?

Thanks, Ken

It's a Nikon problem! lol. j/k it's basically lines going across your images when using digital.

couldn't it be described similiarly to bad agitation during development?

Thanks for your responses folks. I decided to go ahead with the D200 (maybe it will be my backup one day to the next genearation D2x!!). I've just been playing around with it for a day or so and love it so far. I ended up purchasing it in Best Buy (amazingly they had one in stock), and being a "Reward Zone" member, they currently have a deal for 12% off all cameras so I saved a couple of hundred there - in case you're interested. Cheers.

I haven't read anything about a banding problem with the D200. I guess I'll Google that to see what kind of documentation I can find. The Popular Photography Magazine gave the D200 a glowing review. If I wasn't already sold on the idea of having one that would have pushed me over the edge.

It wasn't hard to find something on banding. I'm glad I was forced to wait a while LOL. I still think I'll eventually get the camera though.

  Michael,

Let us know how you like the D-200 after you have some time to use it.

Thanks, Ken
