Help please .. PS Layers problem

Hi ... I’m looking for some suggestions. In past versions of Photoshop, layers seemed to work as they should, but ever since installing PS CS2 I’ve been having a problem using layers. I wonder if there is a setting or checkbox that I’ve missed or is incorrectly set.
When I use layers, the background comes up as normal in the layers pallet, but if I make a second layer and open something into it ... the second layer disappears and reverts to being background. I can only ever get one layer showing in the pallet. When I close the newer layer, it reverts back to the original background. This has become very frustrating as I am not a whiz at PS and am stumped. Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

  Lyn,

There are two ways to create a new layer in PS CS2.

First, you can click the flyout arrow near the top of Layers palette, and select "Create new layer." The layer will appear above the background layer.

Second, you can click the new layer button (fourth from the left at the bottom of the palette) to create a new Adjustment layer.

Try these two and let us know if it's not working.

Thanks David ... it seems I was trying to "file open " in my new layers and should have been using " file place ". Don't ever remember using " place " before, but it seems to work. Appreciate your time on this.
