Photography Question

Sandy E. Homer

How do I use a Manual focus Lens?

I just bought a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens it is in the mail and should be here tomorrow. If just occurred to me that it is a manual focus lens. I have always used my lenses on Auto focus. I am a little nervous now. What should I expect? Any suggestions on study material? I guess I should have asked these questions before I shelled out $350.00 for the lens. Can someone who has this lens please help me understand what I am to expect. I hope I am worrying for nothing. Help please!

No worry. You just focus yourself. More fun. That's all I use. Just play/practice with it like anything else. Focus on something close, focus across the room. Keep switching.

  Sandy,
What lens did you buy? If it is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, this is most definitely an autofocus lens. It has a switch, like most AF lenses, so you can choose MF if you want.

I'm just curious, since you have a 20D.

Chris

EF 50 f/1.4 USM has a feature called "Full Time Manual Focus." That does not mean that it is manual focus only. It means the AF system allows you to override and manually focus even when the switch on the lens is set to AF.

Most useful when you use custom fuction 04 to move AF activation from the shutter button to the * thumb button.

Thank you everyone for the info. I feel much better.
In fact just an hour ago I got the lens in the mail. "OH Canon 1.4 where have you been all my life!"
Really this is the most amazing lens; it has opened a whole new world for me. I have been following my poor cat around for the last hour taking pictures of him.
P.S. Thanks for the encouragement about the manual lens. I am going to mess around with that. I'm excited.

hey gregory, when you're doing your (marquee) , if you put a (/marquee) at the end of your post then it will keep your date/time stamp in place I believe.

replace () with <> obviously.
