Pros and cons of the Manfrotto Head #3265

I am an amateur and buying my first tripod/head. I have read about and had several salespeople suggest the Manfrotto #3001 legs and the #3265 grip head. I like to do nature, sports, kids, horse shows, landscape, etc, so I'd like one that isn't super heavy, but that is solid and easy to use. I liked the way this head works. It seems quick and smooth. Is there another set up I should be considering? I am shooting a Canon Elan llE with various lenses. Thanks for all suggestions!! Brenda

  Brenda,
Bogen's 3265 ball head is designed for supporting about 5.5 pounds maximum (2.5 kg) and is intended for use with short (wide angle) to medium length lenses. It is just fine for your 35mm camera body, but wouldn't recommend it with long and/or heavy telephotos which can be very nose heavy. If you use telephotos, I recommend taking your camera body with your longest, heaviest lens to the store and trying it mounted on the ball head to judge whether it's too nose heavy and how well you will be able to control it using the grip.

You also mentioned Bogen's 3001 leg set. How well these will work for you depends on how tall you are. With the legs fully extended: if you have to raise the center column more than a few inches above the collar to keep from hunching over to look through the viewfinder, they're too short. The platform will not be as solid or steady with the center column is raised more than about 1/4th to 1/3rd its length. If this is the case, look at the 3021 leg set which is taller. Again, suitability of the 3001 height will be based on your height and the height of the head you select for it.

Thanks John!! You said the #3265 head would not handle my 75-300mm lens. What about the #3047? And, would it be good and quick to move for horse show photography and for photographing birds? I need it simple so I can shoot quick. Would I be better off with a monopod, and which one would you suggest? Thanks again!! Brenda

  Brenda,
I realize it has been years since you posted, so I don't know if this will reach you.

I have the 3047 head, which I use on my heavy "studio" tripod. It is not what you want to use for flexibility when shooting action images. The handles are always in the way.

I recommend a good ball head, but cannot tell you which way to go, because I too, am shopping.

The 3047 is probably strong enough for the 75-300 mm lens, but it is just not the right head for action pictures. If you are doing commercial shoots in a studio, or even portraits that need a lot of precision technique, that's one thing. But you'll be making a big mistake using this head for birds or horses, or even small children.

Go with a ball head.
