Photography Question

Wildlife Lens

I use a Nikon D70 & will eventually upgrade to the D200.

My thinking is for now to get a nice Super Zoom or fixed lens for wildlife photography.

I presently usa a Sigma 50-500mm lens & really do like the lens & it's flexability for focal length. This camera setup was very heavy for me at first but I have gotten use to it over some time.

Now I'd like something with more focal length. I would like to save a little money if that is possible. I'm considering the following lenses:

Nikon 400 f/2.8 with an AF 2x tc - wt: 10 lbs $7800.

Sigma 300-800mm with fixed f/5.6 - wt: 12 lbs $5800.

I presently shoot birds & wildlife in Florida but desire to begin travelling into Africa for more big game and primate photography work.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Take care,
Linda

  Linda,
It sounds like you're on the right track with your selections. The 400/2.8 is a serious lens, however, since money seems to be no real issue here, I would also consider Nikon's 200-400 zoom, along with the 600mm/f4 behemoth, and Nikon's dedicated 1.4x and/or 2x tele converters. Unless you really think you'll need the f2.8 maximum aperture of the 400 fixed lens, the 200-400 would probably be more versatile, albeit not quite as sharp as the fixed lens.
The quality these lenses are capable of producing will be totally wasted away unless you also have an appropriate tripod/head setup to properly support lenses of this magnitude. And using lenses such as these, I'd skip the D200, and go straight for the D2X.

PS - Have your husband begin lifting weights in preparation!
