The best rule of thumb I know for photo quality printing is 300 ppi GOING INTO the printer. How big a print of this quality can you get from an image 3000 pixels across the long dimension? Ten inches (3000 divided by 300+10). An Epson can give you nice prints at 240 ppi going in (3000 over 240= whatever, I'm too lazy to do the math). Try with with a Photosmart, too.

Thanks - I have the Epson 870 so a 10x8 is the max I could do ( the whole file would be 8x12 uncropped) - by your calculation at 240ppi. Do you know if I use a photoservice over the internet whether they can get larger prints from this? Can photo labs get a better quality from lower ppi? Thanks

I have heard of a way to get a higher resolution - a software called Genuine Fractals. It can upsample a digital file, generating pixels from surrounding ones to bump up the resolution. I don't know what the limits are on this. Maybe a dye sublimation printer can print better, but I don't know if that can be done using a resolution lower that 300 ppi.The problems you're having may be one reason why Nikon bumped the 35-mm scan resolution to 4000 ppi on their newest film scanner.
