EVER HIRE A MODEL?

Many of you already know how much fun you can have at a photo shoot. I do trade for print and pay shoots with amateur and semi-professional models often and love the interaction between photographer and model. In this shot Carol (the model) was getting bored and decided to wander from the pose we had decided on. Of course you can’t hear it but she was making the purring sound of a cat here and threatening to violate my no nudity policy. Laughter is good medicine.
For those of you that are interested in honing your portrait photography skills I strongly suggest finding a local Model. Both the Photographer and the Model benefit from this type of arrangement and if you give the “college kid” models a few dollars you are helping someone through a financially difficult period of their life.

Come on, don’t be afraid, it’s a confidence builder for both parties.

If you shoot models I’d love to get your input so others can see not only the technical value but the FUN with others side of photography.

Gary I got my first model shoot on this coming Sunday. And believe it or not it's a girl I graduated with! So small world eh, we both move 670 miles to different states and end up running into each other and agreeing on a shoot! lol. Anyways I'll let you know if my nerves let me have any fun on Sunday! Good thread, I wanna hear some people's funny stories! P.S. I've liked you work and check your site often, but my sister doesn't like you (jokingly) because she claims that the "A Thousand Words Photography" was ALL her idea! lol.

hi ya Justin. The name was all her idea was it? Ok, I'll change it to 1001 words and switch my direction from human models to dalmations, lol.

I know you are going to have fun Sunday. There is soooo much to learn that a few hours just fly by. You'll begin to see that posing makes the picture, not to mention the lighting and the settings. It's a blast and I have found it extremely addicting.

Good Luck, have fun and most of all let me know how it went.

Gary

I've actually got something coming up this weekend too hopefully. Actually, possibly two things. Int he school of fine art here, we can reserve time in a hotlight studio, equiped with a few softboxes. The problem is that there are two umbrellas but they are both broken missing the supporting parts and such. Either way, I spent a little time in there and managed to get out a few self portraits that I thought looked pretty cool so I"ll put one or two in my gallery. I'll have these same softboxes with hotlights with a few different colors of paper backdrops any my own tan muslin plus any props that people would normally have around. I'll hopefully put a few up here, otherwise I'll get another link up and let you know how this one goes. I think I'd join in on that huge studio portrait thread, but I dont' want 30 emails or more a day with updates.

  Hi Gary,

I do time for print images also.

I shoot and eleven year old model (Keshia) and I let her parents have access to anything I take. Several examples of my model photography are on my site.

It a win situation for both of us. I get good practice on portrait photography and she get practice as a model. She is excellent at it.

She went to a major expo this year and won child model and talent of the year. She and her mom are going to either New York or California this summer so she can work.

So things can work out for both parties.

Kerby, you are joking arn't you? Don't you know I've been watching that model of yours for at least a year? That kid is a natural and the photographer shooting her is darn good also *smile*. Good to hear from you Kerby.

Hey Andrew, heck, I use broken umbrellas all the time. Especially outdoors in summer when the wind knocks them over. I use load bags now to keep the stands stable. Good luck with your shoot. Keep us in the loop.

Gary

Models are always looking for some free fashion and headshots for their go&see books. The agency will send you new up and coming models, but they will want to see your work first. There are alot of pro's who have contacts with the agencies and are always shooting for stock. So find out when the off season is so you don't have such heavy competition. The agency will pay for the pictures and the model will get this deducted from his or her check (so don't talk money with the model - agecies won't like it). For the newer models it helps to have props or other models to distact from not knowing how to pose. They need the practice, just like you do.

Andrew, I am fortunate to live 10minutes from Laguna Beach and Newport CA so I've got prime locations for shooting outdoors. I've also got the strobes for shooting at my car shows, studios and homes. What I do is assist for some very experienced pros or alternate with them which is what I'm doing on Sunday. We're shooting a model for her website and with two of us and an assistant we don't have too much down time and she loves the different poses and views we both come up with.

I have a good friend in LA who's daughter is a model and she does Time for Prints. She is very pretty and seventeen years old.

If you in Los Angeles and are interesting in a model for time for prints get back with me and I put you in touch or I can send you her One Model Place site to look at.

Yes, I 'hire' them ALL the time. You can take a look at my site where I get my models; please feel free to scroll a few of their profiles.

wow melissa. You have "outstanding work" on your OMP site and I've added myself to the list of those congratulating you. Great work.
I use OMP always. I find MM a bit more for the amateur's and have had to many no shows. You gotta know how frustrating that is.
