OK, I assume that all BP online instructors/mentors would be the judges.

Girish, the judges are never actually identified at all. It's one of the great mysteries of BP. :)

I, personally, don't want to know who they are.......
Could be Jim's dog, I don't care.
I trust BP to have knowledgable judges....:-)

First of all,,,,let's get rid of this word judges. It makes it seem as if we will do hard time if our photographs don't pass muster. The people that "view" our images, and there are many of them, all having different talents, different ways of critiquing our entries. I'm guessing that the portrait expert, the adobe expert and the landscape expert, when looking at the photographs, probably, and this is just a guess, but I don't think they end up rolling around on the floor pulling each others hair out.
I don't really understand why the fascination with this subject,,it's art,,just enjoy it.
If you really want to get upset or inquisitive I'll offer another topic, like,,,,who the heck pick the lottery numbers and why don't I ever win?

regards,,,keep shooting,,,and of course, keep smiling

Gary.

The Washington Lotto was way up the other day, so about 16 of us all put in $20 apiece and had one person go buy $320 worth of tickets. The outcome? After it was all over, and our winnings were divided up, we each got $.80 (that's eighty cents) for our efforts....:-)
Have fun and keep shooting, eh?
Bob

WOW,,,you have 15 friends? whooda guessed. lol,,,hi bob,,,you don't have 16 friends because you didn't give me a chance to win. I think we should buy a ticket every day, no matter if there is a draw or not. Just enter enter enter enter. Perhaps, the guy that works at his selection, chooses his numbers carefully,, well,,he just may get a mention. *smile*

I just read what I wrote.
it isn't plain enough for me.

quick picks,,,,as in lotterys, are a long shot. that's what the entries have become for the most part, a shot in the dark. Look for yourself.

these are our best entries everyone?
come on.
pre judge,,,save the staff some time !!

No, I said, 16 "of us", didn't say friends. I'm the old grey haired crabby guy, remember?...:-)
And, I do my best to choose carefully...altho, sometimes I do throw in a blurry one out of desperation..:-(

well to be quite honest, id like to see the contest changed to one or two entries per month or one entry into each of the catagories.. im betting everyone out there is like me...by the end of the month your throwing anyoldshot into the contest just to up your chances of getting at least a finalists button... Hmmmm I wonder if I can buy some winner and finalists buttons from BP?
lol

on a side note about the lottery.. im gonna win the next big one because I didnt get the $365 mill. last month!

The intention here is to know judges' names and see their galleries/work and learn from them; and be better!

Here is the link for those that haven't read it. It explains very well what the judges are looking for.
http://www.betterphoto.com/contest/guidelines.php
As far as who the Judges are I'd guess they are all or most of the Better Photo Staff.
They certainly won't "farm out" the judging process. I'm also sure they take turns or perhaps it's a "who's available" type thing.

Anyhow, the contest is a very large part of what makes this site work and I for one truly believe they do a terrific job.

Girish, the BP Staff webpages are listed on the site. I'm sure in viewing these you would also be viewing the Judges work.

I agree with Gary that they are likely Better Photo staff and instructors. Does anyone really think it matters to scoring a win if we have the names or are we just curious? Anyway here's a link to instructor's galleries if you're just wanting to study from the masters. There are a lot of fantastic images in these galleries and websites!

  I was just curious.
I thought that If we know them, we may have better opprtunity to see their galleries and we may have better opprtunity to reach to their STANDARDS.
Gary and Sharon are absolutely right!
The sites you have recommended are the best ones.
They cover gudance and galleries.
Thank you Sharon and Gary for a very useful guidance.

I hope this doesn't sound unkind, but strive to reach your OWN standards. Shoot towards YOUR own goals of excellence. Delete images that don't meet your expectations. Critique every image you take. Does it have distracting elements? is the exposure correct? is it sharp? does it follow rules of composition such as the rule of thirds? If all of the elements of a great photo fall into place then you have reached a standard of excellence. Just my 2 cents :) BTW, this is NOT a reflection on your gallery. I think you have a lot of beautiful images.

I never did care for the rule of thirds... I look at it as more of a guide line than a rule. Besides, if it were so important, why doesnt it apply to Macros, and Portraits?

True, Craig. I actually HATED it when I first became aware of it and tried shooting around it, but after learning of it and looking back at my beginning efforts eons ago I realized how far off my composition was without it. My landscapes between ground and sky were split right in half. I at least know better than to do that now.

Before I knew about the rule of thirds, my flower shots were right smack dab in the middle of the frame, and they were lost in space. So it can really help your pics.

It is right Sharon that before we impress anybody, we should like and be satisfied with our image.
Make highest standards and goals. and try to follow them.
However, If you see and watch carefully other people's (who are established in the field, like Jim)galleries, you learn a lot!
Learning by looking is also one way to get motivated and to raise you own standards.

I agree but what then does one do with an ugly fore ground? or a sot of a flower that is surrounded by ugly? I do to use the rule but I know alot of people who think, "Oh my god, Rule of Thirds... I better not break it or my shots will be bad"
lol. I just think Its just not a concrete rule. Yeahm no one likes the frame cut in half by a Horizon but sometimes it cant be helped.. Thats when the rule goes out the window for me. And to be quite honest, I dont too much care for a shot of a single item with 2 3rds of the frame is blank... But that might be just me. besides... isnt the center a third?
lol
