Photography Question

Raman Chawla

Can I use Pentax f2.8/ 100 mm macro lens for portr

I am planning to buy one Pentax FA lens(f/2.8 1:1 100 mm macro lens) and was wondering if I will be able to use this lens for portraits also? I am scared that it may magnify all the blemishes and skin imperfections of my subject. A quick reply will be highly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

Raman, I don't think you offended him. Sometimes we Americans just have an unusual sense of humor. I think Tom was joking with you.

  Raman,
I don't think you need to worry about magnifying blemishes and skin imperfections.

As a macro lens, it will have a close minimum focusing distance, so you can get close to a small object for macro images. But at a normal shooting distance for a portrait, it should function as any other 100mm lens. And 100mm is a good focal length for portraits.

The large 2.8 aperture will also allow you to get shallow DOF and good separation from your background, which is usually desirable in portraits.

Thank you Kerry, Chris and Tom for your clarification about joking and the lens in question. Actually I had already ordered for the lens and quite an expensive lens it is 520 usd, so I had this scariest thought that perhaps a macro lens may not be useful for non-macro work. But now thanks to Chris's input I am reassured. Raman.
