Photography Question

Clark E. Brown

Getting started in photography

I have had a interest in photography going on 20 years, starting from general interest to now where my feelings are of wanting to make a complete career change to the field of photography that has grown as the passion of mine. I have come across so much opportunity in the industry, however feel overwhelmed with the wealth of information on getting started. This leaves me at a crossroads of several paths to follow, I just want some advice on effective ways to get started.

Makeing a career change is hard.
I think that the first thing you need to do is narrow down the field a bit.
What kind of photography do you want to do?
from there we may be able to be a bit more help.
I look forward to hearing back.

Thank you for the response. You are correct, career change is hard, especially with generalized focus as I have right now. I really am beginning soul-searching and reflection on what I want from a career in photography and have interests in Architectural, Progressive construction, Sports, Stock sales and Family Portraiture. I am generally pleased just taking pictures, but these areas are of most interest to me. Thank you again for your feedback, I look forward to discussing this further.

Well, Those whould be the areas, that could get you going a bit easier.
Sports and Portraiture.
As far as stock Sales, I really belive you have to go out and work that hard-there are people here that really hit the shows, display thier work in hopes of selling in this market.
Sports, if were talking local team stuff ect. that is something that you can start building on the weekends, as you build towards a strong enough clientel to afford you to make a change.
And of course family portraiture as well, you can start doing this on the weekend and any spare time , to build you base business.
It is a tough business and very competitive, so I do not recommend anyone just quit thier "day job"
until building thier base clientel and getting a true feel for the market.
If I can help you in any way feel free to contact me,
Debby

Yes, it is a tough, competitive business. I already have a bit of foot in some doors with local school teams and some interest from former co-workers about family portraiture. Thank you so much for the advice, I will take it to heart and use to propel myself forward in developing my talents and skills. I shoot primarily film right now, but am looking forward to going to more digital, because I have seen the possibilities there. Would you recommend that, in my building base clientel, shoot and process prints independently or I have found some good resources for setting (betterphoto.com or even a link from the PPA web site, orderpictures.com) or do you have any other suggestions there?

Again, thank you for the feedback. It is greatly appreciated. It's great to find an industry of professionals, like yourself, so willing to build up other members of the industry. Your feedback has given me increased level of interest and hope.
