Photography Question

30D Body -What's the difference?

The Canon 20D body is made of magnesium -alloy. The 30D is a magnesium clad body. Is there a difference? Explain. I mean is one more rugged than the other?

Sounds like it's not a solid unit. Like it may be magnesium plates over plastic. Maybe it's magnesium on high impact places.

Where do you see that it is magnesium clad? The Canon press release says "rugged magnesium alloy body". I think the body construction is the same as the 20D.

They have made the shutter more rugged with a 100,000-shot rating, why would they make the body less solid?

Chris

  Hi Deborah,

They think they know everything, unfortunate. I would definitely purchase the 30D. Adorama will take trade ins so that you won't have to pay full price. I'm thinking about doing this with one of my 20D's which I use as back-ups (one for me and my assistant). It's a good price for a professional camera.

Thanks Craig, So what do you think of Greg's comment that it's possibly not a "solid" unit? Although, it's not like I plan on jumping up and down on the thing or throwing it under the tire of my s.u.v.
This question is for Craig as well as anyone else.

The 20D isn't that rugged, but it is the best and cheapest digital camera in the canon field. Just always hang that strap around your neck until you can afford to drop it. The handstrap is an excellent idea if you can't stand the neck pain. And if you have to stand while changing lenses bend down and do it between tightly close legs. If you want something solid you'll have to pay a solid price. With the new 30D you could shoot over a hundred weddings, thats enough shutter till you make the next step.

I have an insurance policy that covers my equipment and biz so that I don't have to worry about breakage or being sued. It's all covered.

Cladding is the combining or covering of one metal with a dissimilar metal, like the way coins are made. So magnesium-clad would be magnesium and some other metal.
But canon did describe the body in the product information as being magnesium ...
The EOS 30D has a solid, substantial feel that complements its compact dimensions. The camera body is constructed of magnesium-alloy, known for its lightweight and ultra-rigid strength."
