Photography Question

What lenses should I have.

I would like to get some advise on what lenses I should buy. I have a Canon Rebel SLR, which I bought for my wife as the "Family" camera for taking pictures of the memorable moments of our lives and recently bought myself the Canon Rebel XT D-SLR, both came with the basic lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) that came with the camera. I am a real estate broker and do some traveling from time to time with my family. I would like to buy a couple of good lenses that will get me the greatest range and versatility, taking into consideration that I would like to use them on both cameras if possible. I need at least one wide angle lens for taking pictures of the inside of homes and a telephoto lens for things I don't seem to be able to get close to. After pricing a few of these out I realized that this is a huge step in my photographic future and wondered if I could get some insight into what was the best way to go in the long run. Also, is IS worth paying the extra money for? Thanks

  Hi Mark;
Welcome to BP.

I'm just playing with my digital right now, and my prime camera is manual focus. I can say this. If you shoot a lot in dark areas, image stabilization is something that's well worth the money. I sure wish I had it. I've got it on my camcorder, and it's saved me from a lot of reshoots.

Have fun and keep shooting,
Mark

  For the Rebel digital, try the wide end of the zoom for your home interiors. If the inevitable barrel distortion is not objectionable, you have your wide angle capability. For wide angle situations with film, look for either the economical but excellent EF 24mm or 28mm f2.8.

For travel shots, a wide angle is fine. I use a 35mm semi-wide for 90% of my shots. The digital equiv of a 35 is in the range of your zoom. For film, I'd add the excellent but not so expensive 85mm f1.8.

  I have the same camera and I have a 70-300 zoom from Sigma.

Remember when you'll be shopping for a flash for this camera to tell the person what camera this is for as not all flashes will be insync with all digital cameras.
