Photography Question

Murtaza H. Saeed

Charge Per Day?

Hello:)

I wrote to a magazine and offered them to choose any picture they liked from my gallery.

They have responded with a few Questions, including how much I would charge daily:

//
Questions asked:
Current location (Country/City)
Areas in which you have photographed
Daily rates (IE $300/day USD)
//

Since I haven't sold any work to a magazine before, I don't know what asking how much I would charge daily means (Daily rates). Does one get paid daily? - and daily for what? the month?

Guidance would be much appreciated

  Some photojournalists (like me) among other photographers, charge based on a day rate, or per project, or per image, depending on the assignment which may take anywhere from an hour to weeks to complete. The day rate does not include usage fees although may be offered if the assignment is made on "work-for-hire" basis. You may also add expenses to your day rate like for travel, meals, film, processing, assistant fees, equipment rentals, excess baggage fees, additional insurance expenses like liability bonding, model fees, make-up artists, stylists for food or clothing or both, ad infinitim.

Essentially the "day rate" is basically a starting point for your fees which is negotiable and varies per project and you should tell the inquiring publication just that. I.E., your day rate depends on what the project involves.

Now that I imagine you're really confused, you should go out and get a couple of books on business practices for professional photographers, read them and pay particular attention to the sections on contracts and setting fees.
