Janet, in the world of tripods, there are two decent lower priced brands - Velbon and Slik. As to which model to get, this is something that you need to decide based on:
1) how tall/short you need it to go,
2) how small you want to to collapse for travel,
3) how heavy the photo gear you will be using on it is
4) how light you want it to be (bearing in mind that lightness and sturdiness are contrary features)
5) what 'extras' you want or need - geared center column, ball head or pan/tilt head, simplicity of leg locks, etc.

Frankly Janet, in my view, you can get an inexpensive tripod, or you can get a good tripod. But I don't think you can really get a good and inexpensive tripod. Velbon and Slik are ok for lightweight stuff, maybe a lightweight camera and a medium telephoto lens.

But remember, the purpose of a tripod is to provide support and stability and it shouldn't blow over when the balmy breezes blow. Try thinking of a good tripod as an investment in your photography.

In addition, you should buy a tripod that will likely include future changes in your photography like how much its used, format sizes, longer lenses, travel, studio, height, whether you can remove and change the head on it later, etc. Quite honestly, in over twenty-five years in this biz, I've bought two tripods. On any given day, I'll likely use one or the other. Both are Gitzos and all I've had to replace on one is the tripod feet, and nothing on the other, a much smaller Gitzo Reporter model that I can hang off a camera bag.

A couple of days ago, we had a similar discussion going here. Try and find that one as it had a lot of good info to consider.

Go to a good camera store that has a fair number of tripods including the ones Bob mentioned. Try some out, bring your camera, attach it to the head, lean on it, push, pull, shake rattle [and roll] it, and see if you think it'll meet your needs now and in the future.

Take it light. ;>)

Thanks everyone good advise. I have 2 now, just cheapies but they have worked ok for me for about 20yrs., but I thought maybe I could get a new better one then I have. One is from Blacks photography with there name on it so I don't really know the brand it really is. I thought I would treat myself to a new one. These ones have become a laser level tripod now Ha!Ha! Thanks again sounds good
