Photography Question

Travel Expenses

I am starting to get a lot of requests for out-of-town weddings and am not sure what to charge for mileage and/or travel expense. The CPA that has been helping me is out of the office this week and I have several brides to respond to. Any input is welcome!

Well, if you have a declared hourly rate (even if it's your price divided by the number of hours you spend on the wedding) you could offer travel time at 1/2 that rate. In other words, you are implying that your time is still valuable, but that you realize that you can't [enalize the B&G completely just because you have to travel more than an hour to get to them.

  Robin,

you can't charge anything other than your normal fee, plus expenses. expenses are airfare and room. not food, or other expenses that you would have if you were at home.

it's simple. this is why many wedding photographers hate travelling, there's not much in it for you. most single photog's who do this make a vacation out of it. but, if you have a family, it aint fun or glamourous.

this is also why wedding photog's only travel if someone buys their top package.

it's not worth doing for cheap because of all the time you will spend. and, if you decide to do a 4 hour package, don't do more just because you are there. this is a downfall I have seen is the couple buys 4 hours, you go, then the couple says, hey, youre not doing anything, and were here, lets take some more pics.

it can get out of control. treat it like a job. do the time, and then enjoy the trip.
