Sharon, I've just come back from a 10k race, and am too tired to go through all the questions, but it looks like a good thread :) In the meantime I just Googled Galen Rowell (never heard of him in SA before) and WOW, OMG, Faint!!! Sublime. I reckon though, that if there's anyone at BP I really admire as an awesome landscape photographer, who's following in Galens footsteps, dare I say - it has to be Marc Adamus - his stuff is just mind-blowing. I ditto a lot of your comments - but mine would be Canon 5D and MarkII DS. Ditto on the money story !

Thanks, Robyn! I agree Marc Adamus has outstanding photography! One of these days I'm going to figure out how they capture such wonderful light all the time. No matter when I arrive at a scene that remarkable light and color eludes me. I know they must use filters but that isn't even working very well for me. This is something I would aspire to if I can't have the income LOL.

David A. Bliss   When did you become interested in Photography?
In the 80s first, then seriously around '94

Are you professional or hobbyist?
Hobbyist still, unfortunately ;-)

Are you a traditional photographer or do you enjoy Photoshop or both?
I have become more of a PS guy

Film or digital or both?
I used to shoot film, but switched to digital. I still have my film cameras, and there are some things I want to go back to film for.

What is your current camera/equipment?
Canon 10D, Canon 20-35, Canon 28-105, Canon 70-210, Sigma 400, other lenses and filters...

What camera would you own if money were no object?
Whatever the top of the line Canon digital was at the time!

What are you favorite subjects?
Landscapes, nature

Describe your favorite photo or add to this thread.
I shot a picture many years ago above timberline on Mt Evans. It was spring, and the wild flowers were blooming. There was a small pond, that was reflecting a beautiful sky. At the far side of the pond were two mountain goats, lying facing each other. They were also reflecting into the pond. It might be one of the best pictures I have ever taken (through no fault of my own ;-). This was back when I was shooting slides. I have misplaced the slide. I had it out to take to the lab to have them scan it, and then I don't know what happened to it. I have moved twice since then. Learned a valuable lesson about taking better care of my slides!!!

What do you want to learn?
There is so much, I just want to keep learning and getting better.

What have you achieved in photography?
Well, besides being a finalist here ;-) I have been acknowledged on other sites, and have sold my photography services. I am getting my work together for an art walk.

What would you like to achieve that you haven't? Yep, doing this full time!

Where and/or what area of the world do you enjoy photographing the most?
There are so many! I have spent most of my time shooting in the west, because that is where I am from, and I don't have the money for many adventures. I do like shooting Rocky Mountain National Park, the Moab area (Arches and Canyonlands), Glacier was amazing and I want to go back, and the Colubmia Gorge was terrific.

How often do you use your camera?
Not as often as I would like to, that's for sure! I used to get out for sunrise every weekend, but life has been keeping me busy with other things. What I really need to do is MAKE time for it!

What famous photographer inspires you? Probably the first photographer that I really considered an influence was Art Wolfe. His work has kept me going! The Muenches are amazing, also.

Favorite photography quote? Can't say that I have one. How about f8 and be there!!!

Thanks everyone! I am really enjoying this!

David, I can relate to misplacing a slide. I had one I really liked of Thor's Hammer in Bryce NP. The lighting was exceptional. I haven't moved so maybe one day I'll stumble across where I placed it. I accidentally threw a negative of anothe favorite shot. Let's not talk about what can happen to digital, like deleting a whole folder LOL.

When did you become interested in Photography?
Back in the 70’s…when I was in my teens. I started carrying a small 110 instamatic on fishing trips to take pictures of the fish I was releasing. (Mainly to prove to my family and friends that I wasn’t just telling fish stories.) I got my first SLR (a Nikon FE) back in 1984 and it took off from there.

Are you professional or hobbyist?
A little of both. I shoot for fun but have made money selling prints and doing public lectures and slide shows. Time restraints have taken their toll in recent years so I shoot when I can,…mostly for fun.

Are you a traditional photographer or do you enjoy Photoshop or both?
I use slide film exclusively and shoot in full-manual 100% of the time. I don’t have Photoshop. My imaging software (and knowledge of same) is very basic. I only scan the best of the best so there’s less fixing.

What is your current camera/equipment?
(2) Nikon FM2 bodies… each with an MD-12 motor drive, an assortment of Nikkor manual-focus prime lenses from 35 mm up to 300 mm, Vivitar 285 flash, an assortment of remote accessories and other gadgets.

What camera would you own if money were no object?
Hmmm,…probably a medium format Hasselblad.

What are you favorite subjects?
Just about anything in Nature. I love shooting insects and reptiles. I think they are truly fascinating subjects.

Describe your favorite photo or add to this thread.
It’s hard to come up with a “favorite photo”. Each photo has a “story” behind it that evokes a different emotion or memory of the time when it was taken. Favorites vary from day to day, … trip to trip.

What do you want to learn?
I’d like to become more educated in the physics of light and all the technical stuff. (Sometimes I’ll start reading one of Jon Close’s answers on the BP Forum and my brain starts hurting.) :(

What have you achieved in photography?
Some publication, print sales, public slide shows.

What would you like to achieve that you haven't?
A Cover Shot! (National Geographic would be nice, but I’d settle for Outdoor Photographer.)

Where and/or what area of the world do you enjoy photographing the most?
The desert southwest. I just got back from a trip out there and had a blast!

How often do you use your camera?
Usually twice a week,…sometimes less.

What famous photographer inspires you?
Galen Rowell’s works have inspired me as well. My earliest inspiration came from the renown outdoor writer/photographer (and fellow Marylander) Lefty Krey. I went to a few of his slide show/lectures. He is a great photographer and teacher.

Favorite photography quote?
“Don’t take time to explain how or why you took a photo. Just throw it up onto the screen and let it stand on its own. Give it 10 or 15 seconds, then go on to the next one. Your audience will get its meaning if the photo is good enough” …Lefty Krey
(…not verbatim, but a lesson I’ve never forgotten.)

Bob

  Okay, here's my answers.
I became interested in photography in 1970. I was eight years old.
I am a reimbursed hobbyist.
I shoot mainly film, but am dabbling in digital.
I would have to call myself traditional.
I have two Minolta X700 bodies, one with an autowinder G, and one with an MD-1 motor drive. I also own a Pracktica MTL-3. I have numerous lenses and flash units for both.
If money were no object, I would own a Hasselblad CM500.
My favorite subjects are weather and children.
I've seen so many great photographs on this site that I can't pick a favorite.
I want to learn as much as I can.
My greatest achievement is through my photograph entitled Playtime (see my gallery). Through a photo essay contest to benefit the Children's Miracle Network, this photo now hangs in the Smithsonian Institute.
I have as much as possible. I just want to live happy.
I would love to go back to Austria to shoot. It's a beautiful country.
At least once a day.
Ansel Adams, Yoseph Karsh
See my above answer.
