Long Exposures and noise w/ Digital

Hi all,

I read on a DPReview.com forum that all digital cameras exhibit pretty bad noise with long exposures. I love to do scenics with my film cameras and long exposures (5-30 seconds) on a tripod.

Noise is one thing I hate in a pic. Am I doomed to have to deal with it if I decide to "go digital"?

Thanks!

For up to 30 second exposures you could be okay with a DSLR, where the photosites are larger than they are with the point & shoot type digicams. (Larger photosites are less susceptable to random heaet photons creating faux light readings).

Of course, most professional astronomers use digital sensors behind the giant telescopes nowadays, but these are chilled to really low temperatures exactly to avoid noise issues.

You may be better off waiting for some newer technology (maaybe CMOS or something next?) that could be less problematic when it comes to long exposures, though.

Long digital exposures taken at high ISO settings are much more susceptible to noise than with low ISO settings.

So long-exposure scenic images taken at ISO 100 would not have as much noise as low-light astronomy imagaes where you need to bump up the ISO and use a long exposure.
