Photography Question

Gary T. Brown

Which 488 QR Plate ?

I'm in the market for a new tripod. I've narrowed my choice down to a Manfrotto 3021Pro. The ballhead I'm looking at is the Manfrotto 488, which offers 3 different quick release (QR) plates. A hexagonal plate (488RCO), a rectangle plate (488RC2) and a large rectangle plate (488RC4). I'll be using a D70 w/ a 18-70 lense. Shooting landscapes, candid shots and macro. Any comments/advice/experience or words of wisdom on which QR I should sway toward?? I appreciate any input.

Thanks
Gary

Gary, I used to have the Bogen (now Manfrotto) hexagonal QR plates, and have to tell you that the more standard Arca-Swiss system is far better IMHO. Plates and clamps are made by a number of companies - notably Really Right Stuff and Kirk Photo. Compared to the hex plates, these are much more contoured to the camera bottoms and lens foot(s), and quicker to use. At least, that's what I have experienced.

I agree with Bob that those Bogen hex plates are a pain compared with other designs. The 3021 is a good tripod, but I don't like Manfrotto ballheads at all, mine would either slip after tightening, or have an adjustment that was either full-tight or full-loose, with no middle ground. You can go Arca-Swiss, Kirk or RRS, also the Markins. If you are on a budget, even the better single-lever clamshell Velbons (PH-273QR) hold tighter and adjust more easily, plus their plates snap in a lot faster.
