Mounting Extra Long Panoramas

Has anyone experience of trying to mount a panorama 1 ft x 6 ft as I have several this size and cannot get mountboard or foamboard this length? Is it possible to join smaller boards without showing the joins through the photograph?

Thanks

  Martin,

Foamboard (or foamcore, as we call it in the midwest) full size is 4x8" at the art supply store. Where are you trying to get it?

  Hi David,
I'm living in Ireland, Europe. I knew that foamcore came in 8 ft lengths but I can't source it here as none of the Art shops are prepared to get in single sheets and ordering it from abroad costs too much in postage.

  Hi Martin,

Didn't realize you were in Ireland - I hate to even think of the postage on a 4x8' sheet of foamcore (weight maybe three oz) all the way to Ireland -

  Martin,
I've never run across Foamboard/foamcore in 4'x8' sheets. That's not to say it doesn't exist, but in all my years of mounting, matting, and framing, I've never seen it. It normally comes in 32" x 40" sheets.
Gatorboard (which is a different substrate), comes in a variety of thicknesses, AND IS available in 48" x 96". That may well be your only choice, although it is somewhat expensive.
DO NOT try to "piece" together any backing material. It won't work.

Some non-archival alternatives would be to mount it to styrene, mason board, home insulation board, or something similar. Most of these substrates do come in 96" lengths.
BTW - Have you inquired at a framing shop?

  Michael,

Thanks for your suggestions. I might give insulation board a try. The only other way is to split the photograph in two, which takes away the whole effect!

  Martrin,
My first recommendation would be to mount it to Gatorboard. The thickness would depend on what you plan to do with it once mounted. Checkout www.codamount.com. I do a brisk business with them buying their Standouts and foamboards, precut to size. Perhaps they can work with you in the size you need - this IS their business afterall!
Are you having the print made by a photo lab? If so, look to see if you can find a lab that can also mount the print for you. Chromatics in Nashville, TN is a full service lab, and can mount to many different surfaces.
I'm thinking that any lab that can print that big might also be able to mount that big. Who knows?
Just out of curiosity, did you stitch together several images to create your pano?

Michael,
I've emailed Codamount but as I've said previously I'm living in Ireland and the postage of such large boards from the US doubles the price. Also I'd have to buy in bulk which I don't need.
I use ezprints in the US for my panorama prints (they don't offer mounting). I usually stitch upto 8 prints to obtain my panoramas.
