How do I select Lighting Equipment

I am shopping for lighting. I use a Nikon D70 to take pictures of, primarily, guitars for posting to my websites. I've been using simple shop lights (3) of 1500 watts each, which, of course, requires plenty of modification due to color issues and also tends to create light spots on natural finish tops and heavy reflections on guitars with gloss finishes. I've been told to use Strobe but I've found that using flash simply ruins the pic of a shiny guitar. Others tell me to use continuous lighting but I don't see how this can provide sufficient light without having the lights to close for appropriate pic taking. Lastly, I have limited space, 8 1/2 foot ceilings plu a rather small room. I don't want to overspend and have equipment I don't use; I also don't want to buy something to find out I need something additional. Can someone advise me what to buy?

  Hi Dale;

You didn't say what your budget is?

What you are doing is basically product photography.

I'd suggest a 160 w/s monolight strobe, a light stand w/ boom, and a 40x24" softbox.
You can always use the softbox for portraits too.

All up, maybe 400 bucks.

Pete
