Photography Question

Sandra

Nikon or Canon

I have a canon elan 7e, But I have been using a friends Nikon 70d and love it. Now I want a digital and I need help on what to buy. I have read that some are having problems with dust in the canons. I have a canon 550 speedlite and canon lens ef 85mm 1:1.8 ultrasonic, canon zoom lens ef 28-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 image stabilizer and canon lens ef 50mm 1:1.8 II. Is their a BIG problem with dust in the canon? Should I go with the Nikon or the canon and which canon?

  Sandra,
I've never heard any reviews or comparisons that claimed either Canon or Nikon was better or worse at the dust issue. Practically all SLR cameras are susceptible to getting dust in them when changing lenses. It helps if you turn your camera off before changing the lens, I'm told it reduces the static electricity that can draw dust to the sensor.

I think Olympus makes an SLR with some type of active dust-control system, but I haven't really read much about it.

You have several hundred dollars invested in Canon stuff that will move easily with you to a Canon digital SLR. You really need to consider that in your purchase.

if you switch to nikon then you have to get rid of your lenses and flashes and start all over. if you like your elan, the step to a 20D isn't much of a learning curve. most of the controls are basically in the same position, or easily accessible. and plus, dust problems aren't a cameras fault, it's how much you change lenses and how dirty of an environment you're working in. you can change a canon in clean air and possibly never have a problem but if you're changing lenses on a nikon on a dirt road, you're bound to have probems. it's not really the camera in this case. it's the fact that your lenses won't cross over.

Nikon has made a practice of introducing better gasketing and weather sealing on more of their DSLR models than some other manufacturers, which is a good thing. But I doubt that would make much, if any, difference to anyone experiencing dust on the sensors. All DSLRs get that.
