Sharpness

I have been photographing sports, ie) basketball, wrestling, track and field, bowling, etc. using a Nikon D70 with 70-300 f5.6 lens. My photos do not seem to be a sharp as I woulf like them to be. What is the best remedy for this?

Well, with a range of f/4 to f/5.6 that lens is relatively slow for sports. That means that unless you have a lot of light (outdoors, daylight) your shutter times will be relatively long, even with high ISO settings.

Things that will help:

1) Use a tripod, or monopod at least
2) Set the ISO to the maximum value available on your camera
3) Use a noise reduction program such as Noise Ninja, Neat Image, or similar to reduce the noise caused by high ISO
4) If you can, get a faster lens, f/2.8 or f/2. Most costly option of course.
5) In general, flash won't help, you probably can't get close enough (<30 feet) to the action.
6) Use a white card to set white balance for indoor lighting. Won't help blur, but will eliminate green athletes.
7) You could try something like Focus Magic, a post processing tool intended to reduce motion blur and focus error. Iffy.
8) Underexpose a stop or two to double or quadruple your shutter speed. Compensate in your post processing. Result will be really noisy, and may end up posterized. It will give you an idea what a faster lens would be able to do for you, and whether it's worth it or not.
