Canon EOS Rebel XT- Telephoto Lens Hi BP Members, I send so many members to this forum for great information on photography. Now it is my turn to ask a question. I just got a Canon Rebel XT with a Canon ef28-105mm lens and I love it. It is so much fun to have a Digital SLR. My question to all of you is: does anyone have the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens and what is your review of that lens (we don't currently have that lens listed in our reviewable items)? I foresee needing to photograph my kids during track season and at swim meets where it isn't always easy to get close. Let me know what you think. I would love any input or advice. Take care,

Heather, I have a Canon 75-300mm f4-4.5 IS USM lens. I like the lens but am currently saving to replace it with what I believe would be a faster and better quality lens, Canon's 70-200, 2.8L IS EF USM lens/USA. $1,700.00 a lot of money.

Hi Richard, Yikes, that lens may be beyond my photographic and financial needs. Thanks for your feedback though. Did the Canon 75-300mm serve you well? What type of photography was it best for? Natural light? action shots? (Believe me, I am a beginner so any information is helpful to me). Thanks-Heather Young

Hi Heather Yes, that lens has served me well, The IS is great especially since I take pictures from our fishing boat. I do recommend a tripod whenever possible. I prefer wildlife photography, birds, animals. I also like landscape. Also, I have read shooting at full zoom, 300mm images may not be as sharp as they may at a little under 300mm. May want to check this out with others.

The Canon would be okay for the track stuff, but swim meets, altho they might appear bright because of the water, I think you might want a faster lens because you'd be focusing on the darker swimmer. I got good results of my son playing Lacrosse during the day with a Quantaray (sp?) 70-300. Beginner? When you can turn around and say, "Hey, Jim......."...:-) Bob

Hi Heather, I still own that lens, and though it is a USM...it does make noticeable noise in quiet situations. It allows switching to manual focus via switch on the lens, then using the front focusing ring. I think for the price it will serve you well. The far end isn't as sharp, but still provide great images. I've coupled it with a Tamron-F AF Tele-Converter @2x with acceptable results during good lighting conditions. I use it with the Eos 1v, so not sure how it will be on your Digital...but should be fine. Another lens that might be in your price range is the Sigma EX APO HSM 70-200mm, f/2.8 I use this lens alot , especially with portraits as it is easy to blur the background and lessens need for a flash.
