How to Set up Lighting

I own an digital Olympus Evolt E-300 and have set up a studio in my home. I have purchased the Opus k250 lighting system with a umbrella and softbox. I have white and black paper as a backdrop. My problem is that I am not able to figure out the correct amount of lighting needed to keep the backdrop a uniform colour (without reflections and shadows). I currently have my main light with umbrella at six o'clock and my softbox at three o'clock (both aimed down at 45 degree angle). Is this set up correct? Should my lights be at full power? Does this set up change if you are taking picutres of adults versus children? Please help...
