Photography Question

about categories

This is not a question, more a statement on your categories. There is a need for something like "still life". If I have a picture of a glass or just one item or two, there is no place to put it in. I have read through your suggestions about "how to categorize" they are very, how can I say it, "not good enough". Thats actually putting it kindly. Am I a lone complainer about that?
Cheers
Ev

"If I have a picture of a glass or just one item or two, there is no place to put it in."
Is it in your gallery? When you say, glass, do you mean a glass figurine? Without seeing it, I may be wrong, but would it fit in macro?

i it just a glass with a shadow, actually it is my daughter who want to place it. So I had to look around the sections. I would not classify it as a macro. I I take a still life picture lets say 3 normal every day items, or a set of cutlery.... there is no section to put it. Element of design... no. Macro, no. People, no. Digital darkroom, no, it has not been edited. You see..... !!!!! Or am I missing something here, where do people place items like that. I had a look around other photo sites, all of them have at still life section. I dont want to make trouble or anything like that. help, I am rambeling :)

I agree that sometimes an image does not have a category to place in... but that doesn't keep me from entering into the contest. Sometimes I force it to one category or another... I post them for enjoyment of posting here at BP also, sometimes, for the enjoyment of friends and other viewers (there are some... :))

For example, I make origami figures (Japanese paper folding) of puppes, kitties, horses, armadillos, etc... My image of these figures do not usually fit in any category... Just for amusement of myself, I sometimes place one in the "Animal" category... It won't win even a finalist there..., but it's ok...

Good news is that, in some month, the monthly theme can be perfect fit for some. Here is an example, again, it was an image of origami puppies...
The monthly theme for last February was "LOVE" and this puppies image was titled "Puppy Luv". It was a perfect fit and it was selected in the finalist as well. The puppies were happy before and very happy when they were in the finalist... :)

Ev, why don't you post some of the images that you're not sure about, and we might be able to help you. About cutlery, I've seen it in Elements of design.

  Brendan is right.
He or some people here would find the category that may fit the best,
or even better, find the category that has the best chance of winning.

(btw, there was an error in my sentece above... it should have read, "...but that does not keep me from NOT entering into the contest".... Apology for misleading sentence.)

  Hi All,
Of course it does not matter if I put my picture of a stuffed toy into the pet category or people section. My pictures are not good enough to win anyway. It is just one of those things I find irritating. This is a very well thought out Website, the people are absolutely lovely and generous with their comments etc. Any support for me out there at all :)) "we need a still life category...... "

BTW, next month (February) monthly theme is Purple, Pink, or White.
If your glass or stuffed toy was one of these colors, your photo may fit in that monthly theme.

One more BTW...
There have been a few threads about "wanting still life category" in the past. If you seach the site for "still life", you well see them...
Here is one of those,

Most people put them in Macro/Detail, I think. Occasionally they can go in Elements of Design. It's a tough call sometimes, I agree.

I agree... I think my biggest problem with the contest is this.. if I dont know where to put an image, it has not chance of winning. What if I put an image into the landscape catagory, but it can also go into digital dark room? what to choose? and with only one per day, its kinda hard to do one catagory one day and the other the next. I think ilost out on allot of "finalists" (at the risk of sounding cocky) by using what I thought to be the right catagory but its the wrong one!
anyone else?
Craig-
