Dark images when shooting with my D2X

Recently, I was on a short vacation in Florida. We went to St. Augustine, and Walt Disney World. I shot pictures in both locations, about half in each location looked fine on the LCD screen, but when downloaded to the computer, they were very dark. The meter on the camera said the images should be exposed correctly, slightly overexposed if anything. I was using a 70-300mm lens in St. Augustine, and a 28-105mm lens in Walt Disney World. Why are my photos dark when downloaded.

  Hello Stephanie;

Hmmm? I'm a little puzzled?
Usually when the pic looks ok in the LCD, it should be more or less ok in it's final output.

One habit I use may be of help to you in the future.

I ALWAYS have my histogram display immedietly after the shot is taken.
No; it is not the best indication, but it sure tells you if the image is "distributed" well.

(i.e) If you see your histogram is bunched up to the left with little or no display in the right lower third of the screen, you have underexposed.

Hiope that helps a little,

Pete

  Are you shooting in RAW (NEF), Stephanie? The histogram test is great, but I've been told the Nikon camera monitor display is optimized for JPEG, so the histogram is a little more approximate in NEF (RAW). For a long time, I wondered why my D100 images were darker on the computer than in the camera; I've since learned to treat the RAW version like a negative, and expect that each image routinely has to be tweaked.

  Thank you, Kay, I am shooting JPEG Fine. I have no experience with RAW images, and have not started using the option.

  Hi Stephanie

Im using my D2x for my professional work life as a photographer.And I used nikon D70 2 years.Never trust your Lcd.so always use your histogram and the photoes needs a little bit brilliance and overexposed lights on your LCD.But it must be A little bit.And choose a topic to shoot and shoot the same topic with different f stops and thet look them on your reference monitor on your computer.U ll see that your photoes needs a little bit more light.And if you are not bored from using please use manual function on your camera.I hope you will shoot better photoes.I wish you a beautiful life like you...Hope to share more and more
