Cable shutter release for Canon EOS

I am wanting a cable shutter release for my Digital Rebel (300D) The info I found on the web tells me that the Canon RS-60E3 is crappy, not well made & not worth the money. Is there another option besides the cordless infared unit ??? or how difficult is it to make one???

It's only US$26 at B&H brand new. Infrared units are less expensive. How cheap do you want to go? It may be a little expensive for some people but I am sure it's not crappy. Do you believe the cheaper alternatives will be less crappy? HTH.

I have the RS-60E3. The info you found that characterizes it as "crappy, not well made & not worth the money" is incorrect on all counts.

There are slightly cheaper alternatives if you are a handy DIYer. It uses a standard stereo sub-miniplug (2.5mm). See http://www.peeters.com/300d.html for one solution.

I've seen details online about making a remote switch using a hands-free cord from a cellphone. Sure you might save a couple of bucks, but if you're worried about the RS-60E3 being "not well made", good luck on making a better one.

I have the Canon RC-1 wireless remote and it works fine. When my sister got remarried a few months ago, she asked me to be the photographer. It was a small low-budget affair, but she still wanted pictures. For the family pictures that I needed to be in, I just arranged the other people, framed the shot with my camera on a tripod, and used the remote to trip the shutter. It has an optional 2-second delay, so I could point it at the camera, push, then put my hand down for the picture.

I don't own and can't comment on the particular release mentioned, but have never had any troubles with those of Canon and other brands over the years, with the exception of the pin coming out on those models without a screw lock. A few times the OEM trip switch wasn't the best quality and wore out a little soon, but I just spliced in a new switch. Most are really quite simple devices.

DIY cable remotes can be made by anybody, you generally don't save much money, but I often make these when I want a special length or a higher-quality switch. Many people have made their own mini-plug pin-out remotes for years, as Jon indicates, there's really nothing to it.
