Printers

I am looking at present into buying a new inkjet printer. I have been exploring Epson Stylus printers model R800, R1800 and Photo 1290. Any suggestions?

All three will print excellent photos, that's a given from the Epson stable. However, I just want to make you aware of a potential problem with Epson printers which happened to me recently. All Epson printers have the print-head built inside the printer, whereas HP put the print-head on the ink cartridge which means every time you fit a new HP cartridge, a new print-head is fitted along with it. My 3 year old Epson got a print-head blockage which would not clear despite using special cleaning solvent and leaving it overnight. If I'd had an HP printer I would simply have fitted a new cartridge which, as I said earlier, also replaces the old print-head at the same time. Epson's are fine as long as you intend to use them every day to keep the ink flowing, but for casual users who regularly leave it idle for several days, there's a risk the non-replaceable printhead will become clogged (as mine did). I say it's non-replaceable because in practical terms it is -- you can't buy a new printhead for it. Epson will do it for you but the cost would make it unfeasible considering how cheap even good printers are today. So it all comes down to how often you will be using it. If it's every day or even every other day, go with Epson for the superior image output. My usage is less frequent (much less) and I won't be choosing Epson again unless thay change to the HP cartridge-cum-printhead practice.

Wow, Phillip, I didn't even think of that. I have an Epson 1280 that is only a few months old and I'm not using it every day. Guess I'm stingy on ink. You've scared me into printing something - anything - every day. Thanks for the heads up on that.
