Books on Photoshop CS

Does anyone have any advice on a good manual to buy for Photoshop CS? I have just purchased it and am a beginner. Thanks in advance for any input.

Does anyone have any comments on the Teach Yourself Visually books?

  Hi Lisa and welcome!

I am also a rank beginner with CS2. My favorite books - to date - are The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby and the Adobe Photoshop CS2 Bible. The first book is basic with lots of good "walk-you-through" info and the second book provides loads of info on just about anything you will need to know about the program. I use the Kelby book almost daily because it is so easy to understand and follow. I use the Bible when I am trying to do something more complicated and difficult. I really need to take a PS class here, but right now I just don't have the time. On the Teach Yourself Visually Books - personally, I have not found them helpful, but that it me and others may have had different experiences. You need to think about how you learn the best and then select a book that fits you and your learning style.

  Lisa,

Just be sure you get more than one book. There are things that Scott Kelby suggests as Bible that aren't really very effective. Deke McLelland is another widely published Photoshop guru, and his books are also good - but not perfect either. Don't get me wrong - both of these guys have a lot to share.

Photoshop is maybe the most complicated piece of software on the planet, and you have to develop your own approaches and workflows. The biggest mystery with Photoshop is where to start, and the next is which tools are good and which are useless (yep, they're there, too).

I just bought the Kelby book and CS2 Workflow by Tim Grey on Amazon bunched together. I've had enough time to look at 1/2 the T. Grey book and mark with Post-its each section I found useful. the books are great but a lot to digest, you'll find the step by step to be highly usefull!
