Photography Question

Merging two digital photos

My question is:

I have two photos and I want to put one on top of the other and make them both visible. I have PS CS and I create a layer and put one of them and on another layer I put another, but I can only see one at a time or if I change the opacity or fill on one I slightly see it.
How do I merge them both so that I can see both pictures one on top of the other??
Any ideas?
Thanks!!

  Andrea,
The method you described of adjusting the opacity of one layer to allow the other layer to show through is how this is usually done when you want to overlay a whole image on top of another.

Is the problem that you really just want to overlay a part of the top image on the bottom image? For example, you have one image of a bug and another image of a flower. In this case, you would want to select the bug using one of the marquee selection tools (magic wand, lasso, etc), then copy and paste it onto a new layer. This way it won't have a background, the flower layer would be the background.

Does this help?

Chris

or if you want the photos to evenly display on top of one another make a new layer with the top photo as you're already doing. then adjust the opacity on both of them evenly. to figure this out simple take 100 divided by the number of layers you have. if you have 2 layers then 100/2 = 50 meaning both layers need to be at 50%. if you have 4 layers 100/4=25 so you would change the opacity of all of them to 25% evenly. does this help either?
