Panasonic zoom and lens

I did loads of research for my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20. I thought I got the most bang for my buck, something I could grow into being a beginner and live with for awhile. Now, I'd like a better zoom (the macro zoom is not sharp enough). I can't find one to fit. I don't know what adapters to buy. Do I spend more money on this camera? And does anyone have one/know what telephoto lens and/or adapters to buy? Or sell it and buy something else?

Bleary eyed but still seeing

Tami, the FZ20 does not have an interchangeable lens, so it's not possible to get a "better zoom".

Now, when you say the macro is not sharp enough, the first question is in what way. That is, is the image not sharp because it is out of focus or because of slight movement?

In macro mode (for any lens on any camera) depth of field is quite shallow. It is possible that your dissatisfaction stems from this optical reality; if you're shooting a flower the pistils might be sharp but the petals behind them unsharp.

Mostion blur is possible if you are not using a support, like a tripod. If either the shutter speed is low, or because of that depth of field issue I described you move the camera even a tiny bit this could lead to blurriness.

So, before getting more lenses, test your technique. Use a tripod or some other support, and take a photo of something thin, like a stamp. If that image is not sharp enough for you, then you may want to get more gear. But if you look at the review of the FZ20 on dpreview.com, you will see that it can produce pretty sharp macro shots.

If indeed it's not a matter of technique, then you could concievably get a lens attachment called a close-up lens. This is a clear glass filter-like item but instead of being flat the glass is curved to ac as a lens as well. It screws on like a traditional filter - and to do this on the Lumix you need to buy Panasonic's adapter for just this purpose (I don't know why Panasonic didn't make the lens with conventional filter threads in the first place).

Before you buy something else, though, I suggest you make sure you are using the camera to its fullest potential.

Thank you! Bunches!

When I say it's not clear enough it's because I'm too far away. I want a telephoto lens. Something to bring me closer than I can physically be. The macro is fine, just not for distances, which it's not supposed to be. I do need a tripod. I don't think that will accomplish my goal over all, but it will be an aid. Can you suggest one that I could use with other cameras? I'm quickly out growing my current camera, but like you said, I might just need to understand it better.
