For the Artist Photographing Works I am an artist looking to build a portfolio. I need a SLR camera and lenses for taking quality slides/photographs of interior and exterior murals, artwork, sculptures and also landscapes. I have just purchased a Nikon FG with a 28mm lens to begin photographing mural work, but am wondering if I should upgrade to the Canon Rebel G. What are the pros and cons between these two cameras? The reason I am leaning towards the Nikon is the reduced cost(I think) to me for lenses, some of which I'll probably buy used. Also, what type lens do you recommend for artwork, 2 dimensional, 3'x4' or thereabouts? Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

I will compare the Nikon FG (and cameras like it) to the Canon Rebel series as soon as I can. In the meantime, you are right about costs but the advantages of one good, new SLR may outweigh the ability to afford a bunch of lenses. You will probably want a lens in the 28-80mm range and longer if your work gets small, like the size of your fist. To that size, you will love either a telephoto (100-300mm or so) or a macro. If you get smaller than your fist, you will definitely want a macro. Also, check out our article on How to Photograph Paintings. For it, we used a Kodak digital camera but many of the principles will work just as well when shooting with slides. In a subsequent article, we will go more in detail about using slides, SLRs, and the like for the purpose of shooting artwork. Many people seem to be interested...
