Photography Question

Kerby Pfrangle

Category choice

What category would I place these 2 images in for the contest.

I have them already submitted for the Jan contest but had a suggestion they were in the wrong category. I have them in Special effects and I am not sure if this is the right one.

Any suggestion would be appriciated.

  Kerby if this effect is because of how the light made it, I would put it in Special effects. It said that painting with light goes into Special effects.

If you did the 2 images with filters then I would put them in Digital Dark room. :o)

  Dr Silly no filter or Dark room was used on either of the images. It actually what I was photographing and it came out exactly as I saw it.

Dr. Silly Would element of design be a consideration for this? Or do you think Special effects is a better choice.

I want to get them in the right category.

  Cool images, Kerby! If these are just as you say, mirrors with lights and no effects with computer were made, I put them in Elements of Design.

  Margie absolutely no dark room or filters were used. It was what I was seeing and the pictures came out exactly what I was seeing.

I have them place in Special effects for the Jan contest but I may move them to Elements of Design.

It is so hard for me sometimes to place images in categories when something is a little different.

Thank you Margie and Dr. Silly for your replies.

  Kerby, I think if you look at how to Categorize, you will find Special effect is the right category. :o)

  Dr. Silly,

Right now they are both in Special Effects.

I wonder if I should leave one of them in Special effects and move the other one of them in Elements of Design.

Than I would have both categories covered. One of them would be correct.

I had privite emails and had both answers.

It just hard when you do not know where to place an image. I have not seen anything like this on BP to judge it by.

Thank you for responding. Let me know what you think about moving one of them.

  Kerby, I would leave these in Special Effects for Jan. at least. They "could" also go in "Elements of Design" but Special Effects has fewer entries due to it's being limited to in-camera effects only. These are very pretty. Also, lots of entries in special effects should be in digital darkroom. So very good photos have an excellent change of winning that category. I just checked at Elements of Design has 1273 entries right now and SE has 599. I also think Elements of Design is a harder category to win. Good Luck whatever you do!

  Thank you Kristi

I do not pay much attention to the numbers how many is in a category. I never thought much about it. THe difference is huge.

These will be my first images into the special effect category because I was not sure what Special effect was.

But I look at the play on lights and the brilliant colors and thought they were special.

  I would choose Special Effects, also. If no digital alterations were done, it wouldn't fit digital darkroom. And Elements of Design seems to be more focused on more exact patterns (lots of tulips, lots of lines, etc.).

Kerby Pfrangle
  Sherry that is a really thought too.

I was looking back through past winners and did not find anything like this but your right about the patterning. There is no real solid pattern in the light and mirror images.

I like Kristi suggestion of their being less entries in Special effects so I may just leave them where they are. I went back and looked at numbers like Kristi suggested and the difference is really big between some of the categories.

Thank you for responding I really appricaite it.

  Kerby, here is an example of someting I entered in Special Effects. It is a flower under glass and it made it to the Finalists. Like yours and Elements of Design, it could have also gone under flowers but I felt it was more about the effect than the actual flower.

No link but the "Monet Inspiration" finalist in my gallery was also in Special Effects. It is multiple exposures combined. Also "Rythms in Time" is motion blur.

Just to give you some idea of what works there.

BetterPhoto is actually fairly relaxed about their categories where there are grey areas.

  Kristi thank you very much. I check out your gallery tonight while I wait by the computer to see what happens in the winning round.

Also a big thank you for waking me on the numbers. I had no idea the difference was that big on some of the categories. You look at people and Speical effects is really BIG.

  I am going to move these two images to elements of Design. After talking privitely to a few people I think I have them in the wrong category.

My question is

Can you change the category on the images at any time of day.

or do you have to wait before you place your new image up for the day?

Any help would be appriciated.

  Hi Kerby... if you already successfully entered each of these into the January contest, they are "placed" in the first category you chose at the time of upload/Entry.
As I read/understand the contest rules, you are not supposed to re-enter the same pic again, simply into a new category, in the same month's contest.
(Basically that means if you mis-categorized at Entry time, there is no fix available, until next month's contest, when you can re-enter it in the correct category!)

  Christopher there is a to change the category. I know you have to put the no. of the picture in and than it asks you what category.

But I do not know if you can do it anytime of day or if you have to wait until the new day starts on Better Photo and do it before you place your entry up for the new day?

I did it once but I can't remember and was just wondering if anybody knew.

  Kerby, I didn't realize there was a "change" option. I've always deleted mine and then re-entered into another category. Since they take up another one of my days, I usually just re-enter them the next month in the other category if it's not way off.

I would like to know how to do the change if anyone knows. Once I've uploaded something to the contest I don't get an option to enter again until the next day.

It is possible to add it to another category using the file number if you haven't uploaded one for the day but that will not only use up your day's entry, it will still remain in the other category and be a double entry for the month.

I do wish it were easy to change the category or delete and re-enter when you upload turns out bad.

  Kristi it is possible because I done it.

I just can not remember if you can do after you put your entry up for the day or if you have to wait and do it before you place your new entry the next day.

I know you have to put the no. of your image in and it will come up which category you want to put it in, Than place your regular entry in for the day.

But I am just wondering about the timing of when to do it. It been a couple months ago when I did it and I can not remember.

I know you do not have to waste an entry.

  Kerby (and Kristi),
As you said, timing is important.
I use the following steps to change the category of a photo that has been already entered in the contest:
- wait for the next day or any time thereafter
- and before entering a photo into the contest for that day
- login into your member center
- go to "Your Photos" and locate the photo you wish to change the category
- click on "Enter into contest"
- it will open the photo and you will see the category box under it
- select the category you wish to change to
- click Submit
~~~
This will still allow you to enter a photo into the contest for that day.
  Nobi
Thank you very much.
I did it one time and I could not remember exactly what I did to do it.
I hope I can move both images on the same day than enter the contest.
I write your instructions down so I don't mess up.
Thanks again for your help.
