Photography Question

Steve Ireland

Size of Digital Images

Probably quite a dumb question but I have a 6.2 Megapixel camera but when I shoot at the highets setting ie Fine/Normal do my images come out at anything from around 3.1 MB to 4.2 MB. Is this saying that if the image was so colourful and saturated with detail my camera could handle all this information up to but not beyond 6.2 MB? Many thanks for reading. Steve, UK

You're confusing Megapixels(MP) and Megabytes(MB). They are two different things. I'm pretty sure that 3-4MB for a 6MP DSLR is probably about right. I have a 8MP like DSLR that has about 2.5-3.5MP. Mine is less, because my sensor is smaller.

Thanks Brendan. That seems to make sense.

You may try shooting in RAW, instead of the highest setting, if your camera allows it. This will give you more editing room and you will be able to recover more highlights with underexposed shots. If you overexpose your images it will be more difficult to recover but can also be adjusted in RAW format.
