I'm a little confused. You're "new to this," but have the cash to have a Premium Gallery.

We've seen several your questions and some responses. What goes on?

As to your pictures - most are boring in that the subject is dead center. Only one has the subject [the boy] at a point you could say you used the Rule of Thirds. Thus, they're "all the same" - at least, in terms of placement.

Your portraits are, in my opinion, not too great - but, there is potential. The problem, as I see it, lies in the fact that your camera lens is set for too wide an angle. Hence, faces are distorted. Now, unless that was the point . . .

Portraits should be made with a lens focal length in the range of 90-135 mm. That way you, the photographer, aren't intruding on your model's space and you're able to take advantage of perspective features of the lens. That is, no huge noses, sculptured features, etc.

Finally, you need to watch your cropping in still life photos. In a number of those in your gallery, you've cut off part of the subject - this is disturbing to me.

Hope these comments help. Remember, critique as well as judge's opinion is just that - personal opinion.

  Tamara,

I am by no means an expert, but I will offer my thoughts. I have yet to experiment with poitraits, so I can't offer a lot there. I like to do stills and landscapes with natural light.

The first shot of the rose petals in the bucket is a nice idea. I think you are cropped too tight, and perhaps too straight-on. Also, I think the lighting is too harsh. A softer or larger light from the side would add to the depth.

The next shot of the petals on the white rug? is again cut too close. Perhaps stepping a bit further out cropping it to square would be nice. Also, I think the lighting is too harsh.

The next picture of the dried roses has the same lighting problems. The background is too reflective. Perhaps a black background?

The "inside of rose" is out of focus. I would also want this to be verticle and the stems not coming right up the center. If you are not familiar with the "rule of thirds", you can do a google search and learn all you need to know.

That is all I have time for now....I think you have a good eye, for color and contrast. I look forward to seeing your progress.

  Hello Tamara,

Exactly how hard hitting do you desire the critiques to be? ;)

Many people ask the same question you do; when in actuality, they seek praise and reject the critique.

It is very difficult to judge someone's work w/o causing some ill will.

Without going into much detail, your photos lack in many technical and compositional areas.

You might want to tell us what your experience is, formal traing? Self taught?...etc....
If I feel a photo is worthy, I'm the 1st to praise it and applaud the shooter.
Photography is indeed a subjective art, but there are certain areas that need adhered to.

Pete

well actually I have never owned a camera until xmas. except digital. so I basically have gone photo happy. and dont know a thing about photography. I just happen to fall upon this website and I started looking at pictures and I am feeling something I never have before. I have never enjoyed a hobby. so yes I have been having fun with it. like a child with a new toy. but now I would really like to know more. so any feedback is good. I will take constructive critisism. I want to know what I am doing right and wrong. I saw your photos and they are outstanding. so I would def like some advice. well thanks for responding. tami
