Which camer is better, which one to choose?

I am a mom of 2, and am looking to upgrade to an SLR camera that is automatic yet manual too, for the times I decide to get creative..I LOVE taking pictures and we are fixin to take vacation into snow filled mountains etc.. I want an easy to use camera, with date imprinting, automatic, but can be manual too...autofocus/ maybe autoflash, but one that's attached for sure. I am wanting to expand my picture taking and take those what I call Kodak moments of my children, up close, action, night scene, landscape etc.. I am lookiing at the Olympus IS-20 which I know is FULLY automatic, and then the Olypmus IS 30, and the Minolta STsi....which one is the better camera, I want one to last me many years with out alot if any repairs etc..Please help me out as I need to make my purchase very soon. P.S. I need an easy to use camera. Thanks for your time.

  Lindsay,
I'm not sure it's within your budget or not, but check out the Nikon N65 and Cannon Rebel 2000. They are about $40 more expensive than the Minolta, but allow FULL Manual operation as well as several auto settings. I'm doing exactly the same thing as you and started out looking at the Minolta, but I beleive the Cannon and Nikon's metering and overall quality is better. The Nikon has a metal lens mount, but I prefer the ergonomics of the Cannon. I have not made my decision yet. Let me know what you decide, please.

I would actually recommend a Pentax Mz-7 model, Lindsay, rather than the Nikon N65 or Cannon Rebel 2000. The reason for this is that Pentax still uses a lot more metal in their designs, especially around the lens mount than do Nikon and Cannon at this price point. In fact, I am not sure whether the Nikon N-65 uses a metal mount. If you are going to go with Nikon or Cannon, I would encourage you to go with a Nikon N-80 or higher and a Cannon Elan. They are much more rugged than their cheaper models. However, these are much more expensive. But, the price is worth it.

The drawback of using a Pentax is that their are not as many lens options available. However, I have never really round this to be a problem. I use the Mz-7 and I am very happy with it. I will be getting a second SLR body soon, and it will probably be their flagship model the Mz-S.

In summary, I would look at the Nikon N-80, Cannon Elan, or the Pentax Mz-7. If the Nikon N-65 uses a metal mount then I would also recommend it as well.

Cheers,
Glenn
