When is a Limit Setting on a Lens Useful?
I have just purchased a Sigma 105mm macro lens. I understand that the limit setting on the lens restricts focusing either to macro or normal distances. What is the advantage of using the "limit" setting as opposed to the "normal" setting?

The focus limit speeds autofocus by not allowing the camera to search for focus through the entire range from macro to infinity. Probably 1/2 of the focus "travel" is from .3-1m. If you are shooting macro, then there is no point the camera racking through 1m-oo so you set the focus limit to macro. If you are shooting "normal" then the camera doesn't need to search for focus at less than 1m.

Thanks, Jon. I really appreciate the time you took to answer my question. I always enjoy reading Snapshots and find it very helpful as someone who has developed a keen interest in photography.
