Photography Question

Janessa L. Taber-Webb

Photojournalistic Wedding

I have done tons of great weddings, but someone asked me today if I did photojouranlistic photography.....(the question was in an email) I have never heard of it before. I offer Graphistudio wedding albums, so I was wondering does it have something to do with that?? Just curious, if anyone knows what the bride was talking about.

Not sure but it might be wedding photography without the fancy lighting. Just using existing lighting and shooting away much as a Photojournalist would do. No set ups, no posed or canned shots. Simply catching the day as would a news photographer on assignment.

Sounds good anyway.

That's exactly what photojournalistic style is. It seems to be the trend in wedding photography. It's basically no posed shots, just "documenting" the wedding. Remember that there arent' any "rules" saying absolutely NO posed shots, it's just a style of shooting. Traditional being the "posed" shots and photojournalistic being "candid" shots. A lot of people like mixed and matched. After the ceremony, a few good posed ones and the rest just unobtrusive and "photojournalistic". Good luck, have fun.

Here are a couple examples of a photojournalistic style.

www.paulgero.com

and

www.jeffascough.com

Typically, the shoot more BW than color. Typically, there are few formals and there is no direction or interaction with the client.

Most photographers claim they are photojournalistic because it is a buzz word these days, and brides can't tell the difference.

Here's another reource for you www.wpja.com

Another way that they define it is that you should have very little "camera aware" shots. Meaning, you are just documenting the event, but nodody is looking and smiling at the camera.

Forgot to add that just because it's in, doesn't make it the right thing for you. Plenty of traditional photographer can't stand the style and blame the "fad" on the reason for the explosion of new comers who don't know what they are doing and just claim to be photojournalistic.

Most brides say they want PJ coverage, but then ask for 3 hours of formals. They truly don't know what they want. Most brides, IMO, want a good blend of traditional, PJ, and illustrative photography for their wedding.

Yeah, I study a lot of wedding photog's work to learn from it, and the PJ style can be confused with just clicking at anything that moves.

But when nicely done, wow it's great! My fav PJ is www.daniellez.com

And I think Jerry is definately right- most probably want a nice blend!

Well, as a photojournalist (who doesn't shoot weddings) I can add a bit to what's been said: There is news photography and documentary photography and weddings are basically documentary in nature and tell a stand alone story of the entire event in photographs taken from start to finish. As Jerry referred to illustrative work, that's essentially creating a scene with poses or arranging the props to tell a story. Some posed shots are pretty basic and essential to really documenting the affair, but having an eye for scenes that say alot without words and that aren't set up, is a real asset and primarily what photojournalistic weddings involve. You've got to be fast and good and ready , searching and ready for the next shot. B&W or color, I suppose it doesn't really matter, although I prefer b&w for any assignment. :>)
Take it light
Mark.
