Photography Question

Craig m. Zacarelli

excuse me for being kinda ignorant

didnt know where to ask this so please bear with me...

About this new scam we've been seeing here. "I want to buy your artwork for my Nigerian office or home" I did not get this yet but its quite obvious that allot of you guys have. I realize this is some kind of scam but how does it work?? Im just wondering how this guy will make money? re-sell your photos? or a scam just to get them for free? hows it work, any one know yet?
thanks!

Craig, from what I've heard, is when he pays you, say you agree on 100$ for everything. He will send you a check for say 200$. Then he will ask you to send him a check for the extra 100$. So you send him the 100$ check, then go to cash his check and guess what? His check either doesn't clear, bounces, or something else. So you've just sent him the prints and 100$. My guess would be that the prices would be a lot higher than what I said though.

then what do they do if say, you get the 200 check and cash it and refuse to send anything to him? or better yet, tell him when the check clears, youll send the prints, just like selling on ebay!
Im not even gonna reply if I get the email, im just wondering.
thanks!

Well if you try to cash it, it just wont clear or will bounce.
"or better yet, tell him when the check clears, youll send the prints, just like selling on ebay!"
Well that's probably the best thing to do if you're not sure if they're ligit. And if you do that, I guess they're just screwed and they'll probably leave you alone. But then after all this has happened they've got your email, and then they can sell it.

It could be anything, really. He could say he's willing to pay right away but, then once you quote him a price he'll say... oh well, in that case I'll take 10 of each at $500. Then ask since he's buying so many if he can just wire the money to your bank account. Then wallah, he has your bank number.

That's about how it works, Brendan. I agree that the dollar amounts will be much higher. People will fall for this because they will be offered very large amounts of money for their pictures. The checks or money orders will be forgeries, so the "Nigerian" won't be out more than some postage. The problem is when your bank doesn't discover the forgery until after you send your refund check.

The typical scenario is detailed HERE at www.snopes.com

Cool, thanks... So I really dont have to worry about this, just treat it as any e-bay scam and thats all. When I sell on e-bay, I always wait till the funds clear before I ship and I dont sell to anyone outside the US.. (sorry to anyone not in the US) its just eiser for me because I use UPS through my office and we dont have an international account set up.
Thanks for the heads up guys!
