Photography Question

Suzy Betancourt

Not so sharp in certain areas???

Okay, I need some help here.
This is a snap shot of my step grandaughter which was taken at home. The shutter speed was 1/60 aperture 3.2 at ISO speed 125, focal length 50.0m Just using the flash (no studio lights). Certain areas of the photo are not sharp like the hands and feet (bottom of dress). I am bouncing the lights out of a high cathedral ceiling to avoid shadows. Any sugestions how I can improve the sharpness for future reference?

Thank You
Suzy

  Hello Suzy or Carlos? :)

This is a DOF (depth of field) issue.

Aperture of f/3.2 is pretty "open"
The giveaway here is the piping on the couch which is all in focus.

Decrease your f/stop..Maybe f/6 or 7 or 8..The higher the better..You'll probably have to raise your ISO a little to compensate for the reduced light entering the camera..OR...Get more light on the subject.

All the Best,

Pete

I am sure Pete is right, but the "high cathedral ceiling" is also an issue. If the ceiling is too high, the flash loses so much light that the exposure is made by ambient light: hence the wide-open lens a shallow DOF. A reflector, higher power flash or difuser on the flash gun (allowing you to point it towards the subject without harsh shadows) are all solutions.
