Photography Question

Melissa A. Caudill

Can someone help me with a photoshop question?

I recently bought adobe photoshop elements 4.0. I have two questions-1)Can anyone recommend a good book for this? 2)I have seen pictures where they turn it to black and white and bring some of the color back like eye color or a piece of clothing. Can 4.0 do this technique? I think it looks so neat. Anyway, thanks for any comments or suggestions.

I can't reccomend a book, but what you're thinking of is called selective coloring. This question is asked all the time, so just search the Q&A for "Selective Coloring" and you'll find an awnser.

  Hi Melissa,

I bought a great book called Photoshop Elements "Down & Dirty Tricks" (mine is for 3.0) but I'm sure there is one for 4.0 as well. Did you figure it out yet? If not, email me - maybe I can help you. Have a great day!

Hey Melissa (good name thats my daughters name) If you can find a book by Scott Kelby that is the book to buy. He wrote the book Heather is talking about. Most of my effects I learned came from his books. Selective coloring is about one of the easist effects to do. The art to it is not useing to much color or to little color.

Rick Sammon's "Digital Imaging Workshops." It include some general discussion as well as tutorials, which lead the reader through almost 100 editing options. The book comes with a CD-ROM that has all the pictures he uses in the tutorial so you can "follow along."

It's a real "how-to" and only costs about $20.00.

Hi...I was just going to post a question when I saw this thread. I would be interested in finding out 2 things: 1.) I downloaded a free trial of PSE4 and was wondering if I need to get a book specific to PSE4 or can any PSE book help me? I have never used a PS editing program. 2.) Does anyone know if you can use plug-ins with a trial program? Thanks for any help and Melissa, I hope you don't mind my adding to your thread.

Corinne, it would be best to get one specific to PSE4, but as long as you don't get one that's above what you've got, for you that would be something like CS(2), you should be ok. You might have to adapt a little, ex. some of the tools might be in a different place, there might be new tools it doesn't cover, ect.

About the plugins, I don't know. I would just find a free one and try it.
