Acceptable (general) price range for photos? I have received a request from a visitor who saw my photos in the gallery -- they would like to purchase some of my pictures to have framed as art work for their home. I don't know what an acceptable price range is -- I don't want to quote too low (I value my photography and don't want to give it away). However, I don't want to quote too high either -- can anyone help me with a suitable price range? Thanks

Margaret, Is this "purchaser" from Nigeria or some other third world country. If so, it is a scam. DON'T get caught up in it, and DON'T release any information about yourself. Michael H. Cothran

No, I did see the information about this scam artist though. This is actually a legitimate offer -- upon receiving the message I checked it out before responding and found out that someone I worked with had shown my gallery to some friends and a few friends later this person came to see my photographs and would like to purchase several as framed artwork for the house they are building. But the problem is I don't know what to charge. Any ideas?

Charge what you think is fair. Art really doesn't have a "market" price. There's no competition because each piece is one of a kind.

Try double cost plus shipping and insurance. Chris Walrath

Try doing a search online for other photographers in your area that shoot similiar subject matter and see what they are charging. Subtract or add to that cost as you see fit. Then I would add the cost of framing, matting, and shipping to suit you. It's a place to start anyway.

Margaret, in response to Christopher's answer that you "double cost plus...", I recommend you do not follow that suggestion. I have my work printed by a professional on-line service that charges me less than $6.00 for an 11 x 14 print. I wouldn't consider selling for #13.00 plus S&I. I do not sell paper; I sell art. From Jim Zuckerman's "Shooting & Selling Your Photos," he gives the average range for matted only for an 11x14 at $45 to $95. I offer unmatted for $30. Bottom line, don't base your price on your cost. John

I second what John said. You are not in the business of selling paper. So, don't price that way. Your cost has nothing to do with your price, if that was the case, if all businesses acted that way, your Microsoft operating system software might cost about $.05. But, it doesn't. It costs a few hundred. Gates aint rich because he gives stuff away. Cheers,

Thank you all for the great suggestions -- I would have to agree that double cost plus shipping and handling doesn't seem like the way to go -- no way to factor in the value of the create eye. I ended up just telling this person to make an offer, she ended up purchasing 5 of my photographs (16x20) framed and ready to hang (no shipping and handling) she drove here and picked them up herself from the next state over. She offered $500 for each -- I gladly accepted. Does that make me a professional? :) Thanks again for all the great advice
