Photography Question

Danielle H. Ross

Customer from Nigeria

I have been contacted by someone in Nigeria wanting to purchase three of one of my prints. This is what he wrote "THANKS FOR THE REPLY,I WILL LIKE TO TELL YOU THAT I PREFER PAYING WITH CASHIER CHEQUE AND PLS I HANDLE THE SHIPMENT MY SELF THROUGH MY SHIPPER ,OK,HERE IS THE ONE NEEDED BELOW:..."

I will take Cashiers Check but the idea of him handling the shipment is a little weird to me. I won't agree to that.

Also, this is my first sale (if it is legite). Never sold a print before - how do I decide what to charge?

Thanks.

Danielle, as you likely know, there are more scams coming out of Nigeria that attempt to obtain information, such as account numbers, etc. The soul purpose is to empty your account. If it were me, I would miss a sale rather than get involved in something you may be sorry for later.

If you've replied to him already, then he has your email address. Don't give him any more information. Don't contact him again.

Get a spam filter or junk mail filter, you'll probably need it.

You are right. I have the same kind of Nigerian emails for my gemstone jewelry website business but they never offer to pay by Cashiers Check. That is why I thought possibly it may be legite. Well that certainly burst my bubble. I will delete the email and ignore any future emails. Thanks for the heads up.

Greg, if you read Christophers response, you'll see that Heather has already put out a notice. Also if you reply to them, they've gotcha. They've got your email adress, and I'm pretty sure that that's what they want, not your money.

Being retired from law enforcement my advice is, do not respond to this. They will next ask for your bank account number to make a direct deposit, this is a scam, THIS IS A SCAM. UNFORTUNATLY, their government does not deal with these matters therefore there is virtually no recourse other than, delete it and consider yourself as a wise person.

  Danielle,
I know it may all seem paraniod but everyone here is just trying to keep you safe.
I my self ,as careful as I try to be, have had my ebay account taken over twice, just by answering a better scam artist. As you may know the more business you do the more likli you may fall a victum.
May I suggest that you have all print sales etc. (anything that may be purchases) going to one email address, not your personal that you do your banking etc. out of.
and using paypal in a very good way of protecting yourself.
as far as print sales, I do them out of Photoreflect.com
This gave my a FREE domain name and store front : all purcheses are made through there, sent to the lab I choose, I have present sizes and prices so they pay for it there, the order goes straight to the lab and then shipped straight to the customer.
I just get a check- NO negotiations.
and on all my accounts if there has been a possible scam-I change all pass words to accounts that may be afected.
I do hope this helps and wish you the best of luck,
Debby

HOWEVER, in light of all of the responses to my question, I will ignore their emails in the future. I have a firewall on my computer and spam blocker. I may even change my email addres.   If they offer you a cashier's check or money order, it will be for more than the agreed price and will be bogus. They will ask you to send the photos and a check for the balance back to them. Your check will clear the bank but theirs won't.

  eARL,
YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE THAT ADDRESS, JUST THE PASS WORD.

hEY TO LET YOU ALL KNOW HOW "INTRESTING" THIS ALL IS I HAVE ONE GOING ON RIGHT NOW WHERE HE EMAILED ME SAYING I HAD A SECOND CHANCE OFFER ON A ITEM I HAD BID ON ON EBAY.
NOW,I LIVE WITH A MAN WHO HAS DELT WITH ALL THIS SINCE EBAY STARTED SO I KNOW HOW TO PROTECT MYSELF. THEY JUST GET BETTER!.
I WASN'T THINKING AND GOOFED-I RESPONED WITH REPLY TO THE EMAIL,TO ASK HOW MUCH THE SHIPPING WAS TO BE.
LATER, I WAS WORKING ON EBAY AND SAW A NEW MESSAGE IN MY EBAY MESSAGE BOX,I LOOKED NOT HIM AND NOT ONLY WAS THAT NOT FROM HIM,BUT I NOTICED THE SECOND CHANCE OFFER WAS'T IN MY MESSAGE BOX AS WELL-I KNEW RIGHT AWAY,I GOOFED!!!
I QUICKLY WENT TO ANOTHER COMPUTER AND CHANGED EVERYTHING!( WHEN YOU REPLY YOU ARE GIVING THEM A "IP"ADDRESS AND THEY CAN SEE AND KEEP WATCH OVER EVERYTHING YOU ARE DOING)
THEN WENT TO MY MAIL AND FORWARD IT TO : SPOOF@EBAY.COM ( OR YOU CAN FORWARD TO THE FBI, WITH THIS DOES FOR EBAY MEMBERS)
OF COURSE THIS WAS NOT ALL BEFORE GREG FOUND OUT AND I GOT A "I TOLD YOU ..."
:-( WELL THE NUT HAS EMAILED AGAIN THIS MORNING-STRAIGHT TO :SPOOF@EBAY.COM
I HOPE THIS HELPS,IT'S JUST A NEW AND BETTER SCAM.

I just checked my mail and thought I would post a excert from the ebay letter sent to me concerning my forward:
From: "eBay Customer Support" Add to Address Book Add Mobile Alert
Yahoo! DomainKeys has confirmed that this message was sent by ebay.com. Learn more

Hello,

Thank you for writing to eBay regarding the email you received.

Emails such as this, commonly referred to as "spoof" or "phished"
messages, are sent in an attempt to collect sensitive personal or
financial information from the recipients.

The email you reported was not sent by eBay. We have reported this
email
to the appropriate authorities.

In the future, be very cautious of any email that asks you to submit
information such as your credit card numbers or passwords. If you are
ever concerned about an email you receive from eBay, simply follow
these
steps:

1. Open a new Web browser and type www.ebay.com into your browser
address field to go directly to the eBay site.

2. On eBay, sign into your account and click the "My eBay" button at
the
top of the page.

3. Check the My Messages section located at the top of the My eBay
page.
If an email affects your eBay account, it's now in My Messages. Any
email sent to your registered eBay email address from eBay or from
another eBay member via eBay's member-to-member communication system
will now appear in My Messages.

Just remember, if you get an email to your registered eBay email
address
that looks like it's from eBay about a problem with your account or
requesting personal information, check My Messages first. If it's not
there, it's a fake email.

No guarantee that you're into any virus troubles... you've probably opened the gates to more scam emails from this outfit, since they now know your address to be "legit." But take heart; by not going any further, you've at least avoided the main target of this scam---which is parting you from your OWN money.

  Lani,
REALLY don't feel bad or foolish-thats why I posted that as carful as you can try to be-there is always someone trying to pull something.
Alot of times if you don't know where the email is coming from, it's best to take there address and compose a new letter-now I can remember what it is, but one of the computer experts out there will probubly chime in with how this works: if you just reply, thats how you can get yourself trouble,if you take their address and compose a new mailing then your safe(?) Greg is not here to ask.sorry.
any way to be safe I would just change your passwords. and if you have paid a account or made a tranaction then change the passwords of those accounts as well.
i hope this helps,

Ok Thats it... My fellow BP-ers, we begin bombing Nigeria in ten minutes!

Dont fall for ANY e-mail asking for private numbers. E-bay? I get these once a week at least, I always respond by using a really dirty, off the wall username and password.. ( I admit it, I do get a little chuckle of seeing the ebay "greeting" page come on my screen and say, "Hello MR. A** Wipe" or something like that) but the next thing is, they want your credit card #'s.. youll see that if you wait about an hour or so, the link will be dead..i guess they have t hit and run so's not to get caught.
Dont give ANY info, not on the phone or in an e-mail, a legit e-mail wont have a link and they wont tell you you need to up date your info. And they almost never ever provide you with a direct link to the site..unless they are living in the stone age!

I had one of these guys offering me a unique opportunity to shoot their wedding. I emailed them back and said that my day rate is $50,000 plus all expenses of a crew of 10. This shooting fee is for my time and all prints, albums, etc are additional commissions. On average, my clients spend around $200,000 US. If this is acceptable, we will make the necessary arrangements. We accept cash only. We require a 100% retainer to hold the date for you. Please contact me at your earlier convinience.

I never heard from him again.

I got this one from junio ola as well - unfortunately,I did respond. However, I suggested a liaison through the Nigerian Embassy to handle shipping to avoid any customs fees. Not surprisingly, I haven't heard back. I will head out to Kinko's to change passwords... Wish I had checked here first. I think the worst part is all of us who got excited about sales. Sigh.

Add me to the list of "almost been scammed by Junio". I guess I haven't been keeping up on the forum at BP or I would have known. I did respond with some questions (he wanted prints in the size 16x20cm and I knew right there that something was wrong).I wrote back questioning the size but haven't heard from him as yet. Luckily a local tv station ran a consumer alert about bogus checks and money orders from Nigeria. I was then put on alert. I was coming to the forum to alert other photographers when,lo and behold, the alert had already been put out. I'll pay more attention to the forum from now on.

I vote for around-the-clock saturation bombing of Nigeria...concentrating on Junio Ona's headquarters of course.

Naturally...I'm just kidding but don't be fooled or misled by these types of contacts. They want your money or your personal information so they can use it toward their own ends.

Here's a copy of what I received once through my website at BP:

FROM: DR.JACKSON.KHUMALO .

ATTN: DEAR SIR / MADAM

STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

I am sure, this letter will be a surprise to you, I am DR.JACKSON.KHUMALO of the Republic of Liberian (West Africa)and the former Aide De Camp of the Incumbent President,CHARLES TAYLOR, of the Republic of liberian. I got your address through the South African Information Exchange S.A.I.E. regarding your personal or company profile. The incumbent PRESIDENT, CHARLES TAYLOR, successfully toppled the former president of my country, the late SAMUEL DOE and ruled peacefully for few years. How ever, four (4) years ago, the rebels from the northern part of my country rebelled against the government. Ever since then, my country has been at war.

Due to this war, public funds and properties have been constantly looted and stolen by the rebel soldiers and
government functionaries. However, when the rebel attack became so serious, l was assigned by the President on
behalf of his cabinet six months ago to purchase ammunition worth of U.S.$32 MILLION (Thirty Two Million
United States Dollars) from South Africa, while we were still negotiating for the arms deal in South Africa , we
heard over the news that the rebels has invaded the Capital City, Monrovia and the PRESIDENT CHARLES TAYLOR, has been given automaton to relinquish power, which took place on the 11th day of August 2003, so we saw this as a golden opportunity to divert the fund for our own interest ,coupled with the news we heard about AMERICAN and ECOWAStroops sent to MONROVIA for peace keeping.

Furthermore, we deposited the fund with the Security and Finance Company, here in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am presently living in South Africa on assylum. The Financial law of South Africa does not allow asylum any financial rights. In view of this, coupled with the way in which the money was acquired, I decided not to invest this money anywhere in South Africa or the African continent as a whole. For your efforts, I am prepared to offer you 30% of the total sum if you will assist me to transfer this money into your account overseas, 5% have also been mapped out for expenses that might be incurred in the process of this transaction, and remaining 65% will be for I and my colleague which we intend investing in your country or any where you may deem fit. From the above, you will understand that our entire life and our future and that of our families depends on this money, as such I will very much appreciate if you can assist us. Please note that this transaction is risk free. The major thing I request from you is absolute assurance that this money will be safe when transferred to your account. If you can be of assistance, kindly contact me on the above telephone number. Even if you have decided otherwise, I will be most grateful if you maintain the confidentiality of this matter. I am looking forward to your urgent reply.

Yours sincerely,

DR.JACKSON. KHUMALO.

...This one, I quickly deleted but saved a copy...just for laughs.

I have gotten several of these through betterphoto. I have also gotten many of these for the sale of my pups - so I knew it was a scam. On the dog site I advertise on they post a scam warning on the webpage - other art places send out a scam email warning to help protect their users & let them know this is going around. I just contacted better photo and asked them to do this. If they are still hitting this site so hard my guess is it has worked here already a few times. Beings we are being contacted directly through this site then I think betterphoto has a responsibility to educate people about what is going on.

What a confusing, complicated scam! Got this this morning - I'm now bouncing them back to him.

Hello ,
Thanks very much for your email, The reason I am sending you this email is
to make final reconfirmation of the(Daybreak through Frost
Made with Canon EOS Digital Rebel (300D) Digital SLR Camera
16 x 20 inches---10 in quantities ) and also to let you know that payment will be by certified Cashier Check. In view of this I need you to email me any information that may be required to send the Cashier Check or traveller check, as I do not want to send the Cashier Check to a wrong location least
they gets into the wrong hands. Regarding the shipping, I have a company
that takes care of the pick up of my consignments for me and ship to my
destination, you do not worry about shipping, the
company will send down a representative to arrange the sales documentation
and the pick up from your end for onward transfer to my destination

I also want to alert you on the fact that you will be receiving an overdraft
Cashier Check, which will cover the money for the pickup (pickup and
shipping to the final destination) as well as the money to be paid to the
company that will take care of the pickup and the documentation with you.
So please, as soon as you receive the Cashier Check, go and cash them
immediately, deduct the money that accrues to you(artworks & commision), and
send the balance to the Head Office of the company that handles the shipment
via the nearest Western Union agent in your area. Deduct the Western Union
charges from the balance and send the remaining.

The Cashier Check will be in your name to make it easier for you to receive
payment, deduct your money for the artworks and send the balance via
Western Union as regards my earlier direction, please reconfirm your details
one more time. I will give you the details of the company that you will send
the balance of the money to once I get a reply and agreement that you will
send the money via Western Union money transfer after you cash the Cashier
Check.

Once the money is received by the agent, the shipping agent will contact
you immediately to arrange the documentation as well as the pick up
immediately. So in view of the above, here are some of the details I will
need for final issuance of the Cashier Check to you.

(1) Full Name
(2) Mailing address, not p.o.box please
(3) your direct telephone number
(4) acceptance of my offer

Once you get back to me with all the above, the Cashier Check will be issued
out immediately and it will be sent to you . Hope to hear from you
immediately.
Regards,
junio.

It wasn't until I got the last one saying that he used his own shipping company that I got that "feeling" boy am I glad I didn't send him my mailing address. Thanks for the heads up.   When I first got the email from junio, I was flattered that someone in Nigeria had seen my images and wanted to buy them. Then I remembered that there are lots of scams coming out of that country, so I emailed BetterPhoto.com to ask about it. I'm glad I did!

I mentioned this to a co-worker, who sells her crafts online, and she told me the Nigerian scams were being massively discussed on that website's message boards. She said the word is that some people sit all day in Nigerian web cafes and do nothing but send out scamming emails.

I would also recommend caution if you receive inquiries from anyone in Eastern Europe, which is another location of serious scamming and phishing.

If you ever have questions about whether or not something is a hoax or a scam, I highly recommend a website called snopes.com where they investigate and debunk hoaxes. I found information about the Nigerian scams there, by the way.

I am a little upset by betterphotos lack of response to the note I sent them asking that they notify members or post a warning on the main page. These people are contacting us through THEIR site - the least they could do is notify the unwary that this is happening around here.

Looks like Junio has struck again.;-)I opened my email this morning to find the same letter which just smelled like a scam from Nigeria. Searched his name here and got my confirmation. Perhaps BP could mention the scam in their weekly newsletter, to prevent anyone from getting their hopes up and answering that email?

Man, I'm totally kicking myself. I got the same email from junio and replied back before talking to others who got me thinking about the scam. He's got my email and the spam has started. PLease someone help me out - do I need to change my email password and my betterphoto password? Did a search today and found all these posts. Even posted a little something within my class about getting an order from Nigeria and what should I charge type thing. No one gave me a heads up because I think they just aren't aware. Going back and posting something there straight away.

This is a very old scam (at least in internet terms). It has many variations but a common theme i.e. bad cheques. This is a prime example of social engineering scams. A simple example is someone calling and claiming to be from an internet support group and needs your password to ensure your software is working. Always verify the source. Offer to call them back and get a phone number. Dont respond to emails from banks etc even if you do business with them. They will not ask for account info and many of these email scams redirect you to what looks like the banks webpage but its not. They collect your information that way. Social engineering scams will also use sales tactics to pressure you into giving up info. For example: You have won a car, if you respond with .... info within x hours, you can collect this brand new car. Be aware, be suspicious, always verify.

What gets me, though, is how stupid do these people think we are? I mean, I'm sure I'm not the first one who answered after a delay, thinking for sure it was a scam, because after all, it came out of Nigeria. I felt really bad about that being my very first assumption, but pretty clearly it was a correct assumption. And I know I'm not the only person around who instantly thought "scam" because it came from Nigeria. Maybe if they had used another country's name, I wouldn't have thought that, and I'm ashamed to think that was my first thought. I guess these people don't realize the harm they are doing to their country's already shaky reputation.

  Hi,
I fell for one of these they sent me a check and the bank said it was good then I waited for the check to clear. But I decided to call the person who wrote the check. It was forged. I had to contact the FBI and the local police. It wasn't Nigeria the guy was from england and wanted the prints sent to Nigeria.

  Hi BP Members,

Yes, in response to the Nigerian email scams that all of us were hit with via the contact button on our galleries, Jay has added an authentication step for anyone who wants to contact a BP member via their gallery. This is a great security step and should help in warding off spam.

Also, you have the option now to deactivate your contact button if you choose. You can turn off your contact button via your Member Center>My Member Info.>Contact Info.>Uncheck Contact Form Activation.

Thanks Jay for working so hard and so quickly on this spam issue.

Thanks,

Heather Young

If you are worried about spam, viruses and questionable email sent to you. You might consider using an email service that you long on to a site to view and send your emails. Hotmail, Yahoo and local Internet service providers offer this service. With Rogers Internet, I log on to their site to send and receive emails. The advantage to this is that there is a less chance of downloading potential viruses directly onto your PC and you wont give away your IP address. There is always still a chance of receiving a virus/spam but with proper security software you can prevent most.

Someone mentioned changing passwords…Changing your email/pc/bankcard/betterphoto account password every 30 – 90 days is always smart. Most government employees are required to change passwords every 30 - 90 days for security reasons. If you can, always use upper and lower case and numbers in your passwords.

  Hi,
I got one too from Junio Ola. Despite my feeling that perhaps this wasn't legite, I emailed him back anyway, asking which photos and how many?
He said they were for his new residence in his first email.
When he responded with 6 of one of my photos, I figured I better check it out and emailed BP and they emailed me back saying it was a scam with a link to the forums.
WOW! The things that made me uncomfortable were unfortunately that they were out of Nigeria (sad, but true), and that why would anyone order 6 of the same prints for their house.

Darn it...they prey on our dreams...its cruel.
I use Yahoo....is there anything I need to do?
Moira

Okay I'm the serious idiot, and will probably forward a fraud report to a credit agency, only Junio has changed his name to Alex Smith, or Alex James.

So far no harm done, all he has is my email address, and unfortunately the home address as well. So much for getting excited about this 'big sale' eh? These people are seriously bad.

Remember those names. And man will I think twice in the future.

Here is one thing we all can do...
Go to your member center, and update your bio/info to "not receive contacts" that way, they can't email you in the first place. I've done it, no more Alex's for me.

But don't you ever get people asking you questions or commenting on your photos through your member center? Why would the threat of an email from Alex stop all that? He's just an idiot, anyway.
