Photography Question

Thumbnail size pictures

Why do smaller versions of the original digital picture never look as clear as the original. As in my Premium Gallery, the picture of myself on my bio page just doesn't seem as clear as the original larger version.

Digital pictures are made up of discrete elements (pixels - picture elements). Each pixel can only be one color, and are a fixed size which depends on the viewing medium. For example, a computer monitor might have 72 pixels per inch. A smaller picture viewed on the same medium (computer screen, print, whatever)as a larger picture will have fewer pixels, less information, less detail, and not be as clear.

The thumbnail pictures are only about 100x100 pixels, or 10,000 total. The original picture taken with your dx7590 has 5,000,000 pixels, or 50 times the information and detail.

So is there anything I can do to ensure that a reduced size or thumbnail size picture is as clear as the original. I have a website and I do use the thumbnail option on some of my pages so any help wouuld be much appreciated.

In a word, no. The loss of clarity is a result of the loss of information. You can make the thumbnail link to a larger picture, and display it when clicked.
